I don't know if this has been covered (TL/DR) but I distinguish between expository and verbal text. If I write as a 1st-or-2nd-or-3rd-person narrator, I try for well-crafted prose, unless my goal is to break the fourth wall and *speak* directly to the reader. If I write in the voice of a character, I employ the contractions, slang, and sloppy usage I hear and expect in conversations. Proper Anglish in conversation is stilted, unreal.
