Don't get so excited it was not really that dramatic of a rescue.
The store across the way from my shop called over and asked if anyone could break into a car that had a baby inside. After taking a moment to figure out that they weren't joking I grabbed my trusty slim jim set and headed across the frozen tundra of our parking lot.
I got over there and there are three women, one of which is crying uncontrolably so I figure she is the mother, and two men standing around this Saturn. One of the guys there tells me that he thinks it would be easiest to get into the car from the passenger side sincethe rubber around the window seems softer there. The baby is in the back looking as happy as can be with all the attention she is getting. What seemed to have happend is that while the mother was closing the trunk her keys slipped out of her hand and fell into the trunk. Before she even noticed what happend the trunk was closed and all the doors were already locked.
After a minute or so looking at the car and thinkning about which tool would be best to use I decide to try and go from under the window and hit release the lock from inside the door. I tried that for a couple of minutes but just could not get enough grip on the lock mechanism to turn it.
I look through my tools and try to formulate a new plan remebering what the guy said about the rubber on the top of the door being very soft. After sliding my prybar between the glass and the rubber seal i find that I can get lots of room to work here so look for the appropriate hook to grab the door lock from the outside.
By this time I am making a fair bit of noise so the baby does start crying for the first time but only for a little while because the grandmother quickly distracts her with googley faces.
I slide a longer looped tool through the gap in the window and start trying to hook the door lock from inside the cabin. After a few tries I get a good grip along with enough leverage to pull the lock back and bam the door is open.
The hero worshiping may now commence.
