It's nothing earth-shaking and it's likely that few will care, but there have been a few things happen recently which have made me very happy. I want to share them.
First, it looks as if I'm going to get the opportunity to perform with my chorus in NYC. The plans are still tenative at this point, but things are about 85 percent that we're going to travel for a pair of weekend performances at Concordia College.
Second, we're booked to sing at the largest cathedral in Baltimore before and during a service. I'm not an Episcopal myself, but it's a big deal to those who are, apparently, and it's another chance to sing in a great old hall with breathtaking acoustics.
Third, it looks like we're going to be able to produce professionally pressed and printed CDs sometime in the summer. We're working on deals with the CD printing folks and have either secured or are securing the rights to perform our music on a CD. We're going to sell the CDs for ten bucks a pop (for about 19 songs) and put the money in an account solely for choral activities. That will make us a great deal more flexible about where and when we can perform and opens up a whole new avenue of out-of-state performances. Our first run will be about a thousand CDs, with the option to print more at a reduced price.
We have our concert choir schedule mostly inked now. It look like at least 7 performances, with two more which are tenative. The Chamber Choir will perform at all of those, plus perhaps three more (not including the Concordia trip). That's a lot of performances and I couldn't be happier about it. There are some other prospective gigs which would be incredibly cool if they pan out, but I don't really have a read on how likely it is that they'll happen. One of them involves a week (or ten day) four to eight concert trip back to NYC, singing in such places as St Paul's Cathedral. To do something like that would be a real feather in our cap.
My voice is getting a lot stronger and more resilient, too. Right now, I put in about 8 hours a week of actual organized rehearsal time. That's a lot for an amateur vocalist and it's more work than is done with any save serious college choirs and professional groups. And we're considering adding a bit more private rehearsal time, which would bump me up to around 12 hours a week. I've been concerned about how my voice would hold up but after two weeks, not only is it holding up, it's getting stronger and my range is extending. That makes me very happy.
