Sometimes, life does indeed give some really awesome stuff for art or writing. I had watched a doco yesterday, and it had my mind spinning and twirling on a fabulous fictional concept for a mystery - not erotic though.

The real history of fairy tales from the prostitute salons of Paris, or even the Grimm Brothers having to 'change' their stories because they were too 'black'.

The history of the Amazons (not the myth, but the reality), or of Degas' and where his his idea for the famous sculpture of the "Little Dancer of Fourteen Years" came from, and as Lauren recounted today in an awesome conversation:

"because at that time, the wealthy men, the benefactors of the ballet theatre would basically have "rights" over the dancers. there was even a foyer reserved for them, for the wealthy men to mingle with the girls."

What stories/ concepts/ ideas/ myths/ history fascinate you? (seriously we can all write the same idea and have 100 different tales, so don't be afraid you are giving any up. )

Do you find ideas in them to write 'erotic' fiction?

Got something that fascinates you? Post it here. :D

I'll take History for $200 Alex.
Documentaries get me thinking because as much as I love fantasy, I am more fascinated by what happens in reality.

I think debunking the myth of John Wayne-like cowboys would be mine. I grew up in the American West. I have very different ideas of what constitutes a "cowboy" and what does not. Hollywood, for the most part, is way off. That's not to say that there aren't redneck jackasses among cowboys, nor does it mean all cowboys are a bunch of redneck jackasses. It's just that my experience with them is far removed from what most people (most I've spoken with) have built up in their minds as the "cowboy". For instance, I think it's insulting to cowboys when George Bush is referred to as being one. >>vomit<<<

I'm sure I could weasel in some good old-fashioned erotica in a story about cowboys ...but my main premise would be debunking the myth, I think.

You go, girl! Debunk the myths about injuns, while you're at it. ;)

I find ancient civilizations fascinating....I'm talking ancient-ancient. Not all that much is known, so it's an area ripe for the imagination.

I think you're more qualified in that arena than me, Sweets. :)

Maybe so, but I sometimes feel too close to the subject. I'm not even sure what all the myths, stereotypes are, since I'm on the other side of the fence, so to speak.

As is probably evident from some of my stories, "myths" of all types definitely play into me a lot. My first obsession was on greek mythology and i began devouring other myths and fantasy worlds because of it. I also love tweaking myths bringing out characters who only got bit parts and given them more life.

As of the last couple of years, I have been very interested in the idea of those who have fallen through the cracks of society, who are no longer really connected to the social world.

American folklore, like Paul Bunyon and his blue ox, johhny appleseed, etc doesn't do it for me, but Urban legends and myth do. Something fun like the Jersey devil might make for a good Halloween entry (I would do it in the style of my Ole Onebreast).
The American revolution period, the civil war and the underground railroad would be interesting to do a take on.

Ahh, but his real name was 'Marion'. Is that a cowboy name? And I bet there is a story there. :D Off the top of my head: How does a boy named Marion become the epitomy of masculinity? ;)

Good PR.

But surely, there is a story in there to write. Tell us something that totally intrigues or awes you? It does not have to be myth. Isn't that what writing is about? Our fascinations and interests? :) :rose:

As Abs said, good PR. Also, changing it to John, making movies where he played such things as cowboys, gunslingers, USMC sergeants, cops and other macho characters. His real last name was "Morrison" also.

Which myth has the most impact? We are more Greek oriented to be sure, but what cultures myth fascinates after all the reading? Is there one that you just felt 'awed and in love with?' Even in Greek myth? It is multi-layered. Simplistically a Dionysian vs Appolonian world ... more difficult would be the world of their feminine equals? :)

There are news items ... history ... science topics - anything, and the wealth of ideas is - quite frankly - quantum. ;)

For what? Him? LOL.

Same goes to you Box. :rose:
But of course. I can put a dress on a donkey and tell you it's a princess, you may believe me, but if I present this donkey with a fanfare, mailings, ads and tv spots even the donkey will believe it's royalty.
Think about what name you know me by and the name I go on here....two different people? or two different personas? or just an illusion?

Why is it I picture you floating in here on some cloud in an ethereal Fellini-esque fashion and speaking with subtitles underneath you?

I still do not get the PR thing, so .. So ... Ya - ya - ya I know that's what I said Box. READ IT! Kenna's question interests you? Cowboys? What fascinates you Box about cowboys, then? :)

Perhaps something else in life/culture/science/sex/politics/history? Everything is welcome. :)

I'm reminded of the story about the boy named "Sue"...

I find ideas for all manner of artistic works in a variety of different sources, but mythology and history are amongst the most common and most frequent.

Mythology and history from around the world even, I'm inspired by everything from the traditional Western inspirations of Classical history and mythology, to the history of Persia and the myths and legends of the Near East, to the Far East and the New World. Some of these inspirations extend into ideas for erotic literature, others do not.

The art of others will sometimes give me ideas for artistic works as well; at the moment, I'm thinking about potential story ideas of a Japanese nature, as I am watching a Kurosawa film (Kagemusha).

In general though, I get ideas for various artistic projects from all manner of things, even animals and plants.

Once saw a doc on Benobo chimpanzees. Apparently, their human's closest relatives. They have this habit of having sex whenever they get nervous and it doesn't matter who is closest. If two of them started a fight, there would be a dozen reconciling each other up in the trees. It was an unusual spark that led to an unusual story.

Other sparks have come from talk shows. I could care less about celebrities but listening to an author or historian that has a new idea or just a different take inspires me.

One of those shows had this guy talking about all those old westerns and the homosexual undertones of the sidekicks and buddies. Can't say if he was right but it was an amusing satire idea in a Blazing Saddles sort of way.

As I said above ;) I'm fascinated with ancient civilization: Egyptians, Minoans, etc. Not that much is really known about day to day life, so it's an easy screen to project my imagination on. :)

The everyday lives of most people are an unfathomable mystery to me.

Which is why, I imagine, so many of my stories are about them.

I know you and your sarcasm ;) Just do not get box, sometimes. Are you discussing GW? or Michael Jackson?

What specific idea says AWE to you then? :) Get excited. IT IS exciting, or should be. :D
