Does anyone have any experience with long distance Amtrak journeys?

My husband and I are planning on doing the California Zephyr Chicago to Emeryville in Spring. Hiring a car for a week exploring Oregon and Washington and then doing the Empire Builder back from Seattle(or Portland) to Chicago...We will be getting a roomette for the trips. Looking forward to the experience and hoping the marriage is still intact at the end of the line
