I like Ships too

Rather intrepid.

With maturity, wisdom and experience, I've codified an ironclad rule: I don't cruise where it's too cold to go over the side for a swim. Period. Full stop.

The UPCHUCK from the UK was the only boat that looked like it was semi-prepared to go north.

Dear god, please tell me that boat isn't really named Upchuck.

That seriously cracks me up. I may never be the same.

It appears that the Xue Long is putzing about Shell's leasehold offshore in the Chukchi Sea. Why would the Chinese be doing that?

The Aiviq is on the radar in Dutch Harbor. There's a pile of tugs in port there. Waiting.....

The storm moving over the Eastern Bering Sea and Western Alaska today will track Northeast and move a front east of Point Barrow late Friday or early Saturday. Sea ice behind the front will quickly move into the Barrow area and close Point Barrow to marine traffic.

Mariners attempting to transit between the Chukchi and B
eaufort Seas should prepare for these changing ice conditions:

Within two hours after frontal passage, 6 to 9-tenths ice will move near the coast in the Barrow area. This sea ice will contain first year ice from 4 to 30 inches thick with some thicker ice and some multi-year ice. Smaller concentrations of ice may move into the area a few hours prior to frontal passage.

The Aiviq and the Fennica are headed north to set anchors for the Noble Discoverer (aka A8XM6) which will remain in Dutch Harbor.

I haven't been able to pick up Aiviq on http://www.MarineTraffic.com.

Every time I've entered the vessel name, the site responds "Out of Range." I suspect there isn't any receiver coverage in that remote location.

As you likely know, there have been some complaints registered about the regulatory delays that Shell has encountered. Things are so far behind schedule that they'll be lucky to get any wells drilled at all this year.

See: Shell's Alaska Drilling Delayed by Bureaucracy

...Shell has yet to drill one exploration well after spending almost $5 billion and five years in planning...

Shell’s work has been slowed by opposition from environmental groups..., Coast Guard inspection of a barge to be used in the exploration and thick ice...

The Noble Discoverer goes by the old name, A8XM6 on marinetraffic.com. There's still a pile of Shell's navy in Dutch. There were two Coast Guard Cutters there this morning and another different one, yesterday.

I think Shell tells them to not advertise their location when sailing. The Xue Long was pretty much shown on marinetraffic.com all the way to the Chukchi.

Roger that.
