"On January 16, 1974, the abandoned 80 foot shrimp boat "John and Olaf" was found sheathed in ice and aground in Jute Bay, on the Alaska Peninsula, 40 miles west of Kodiak Island. Single digit temperatures, sustained winds over 100 miles per hour and seas to 40 feet had combined to create extreme icing conditions. Four crewmen, all from Kodiak- John Blaalid, Arthur H Gilbert, David A Gilbert and Ivar Gjerde, were not aboard when rescuers arrived, apparently having abandoned ship in the belief that the boat was in imminent danger of rolling over from the weight of the ice on the superstructure and rigging. A life raft was later discovered on nearby rocks, but the men were never found."

Sonofabitch.

For the moment, the world is up to its eyeballs in gas. In the U.S., there aren't many people making money at a $1.90/Mcf NYMEX price.

Those Appalachian shale well decline curves are pretty amazing. According to one operator, it only takes two years for a newly completed Marcellus well to produce at 40% of its initial rate.

And then leaves the surface land owners without drinking water for 200 years.

As in all human activity, there are (and have always been) sleazy people who take shortcuts and ignore the rules. Given a chance, there's always a small minority who will cheat. That's true in virtually every human activity, from driving automobiles to health insurance to election politics to school examinations.

However, the vast majority of well operators comply with all the rules and regulations. As attested by The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of the Environment, there has not been a single episode of proven water well contamination by a properly completed gas well.

"...Hydraulic fracturing is a technology used to extract natural gas trapped within subsurface rock formations. Natural gas producers have used this process for decades. Current drilling and casing technology and standards enable producers to utilize the process safely and in a manner that is protective to groundwater. [The company] conducts hydraulic fracturing in accordance with state regulations using water recycled from previously fractured wells or obtained from freshwater sources. This water is mixed with sand and a small percentage (less than 0.3%) of chemicals to create a fracturing fluid which is injected into the well at high pressure.

The wells themselves are triple-cased with cement and steel and are designed to ensure that there is no impact to drinking water..."
