They're nice. I like the variety I get on here - Shang and Shango and horsie and horsey. They make me smile. :)

Odd, isn't it, what a personal thing a name is. It's strange that some of the most nasty insults and some of the most affectionate endearments involve giving someone a different name.

Anyone else have one that's a particular favorite?

Here I really only have the one..and name shortening is almost second nature to most people...

the "Tricky" on my tattoo was so commonly used for me in college that I honestly expect there are people out there who would see me at a reunion and remember it but not my real name...and that was true before I had it put on me permamently.

Hmmmm
well the name Elizabetht comes from my SCA stuff.... I have always loved the name and actually went so far as to use it for my writing elsewhere too

From Elizabetht came Lizzy, Lizzie, and Liz....
Also Lizzy the Lizard Licker which somehow came out during the survivor contest of '04... or the Earth Day Contest of that year I am not sure

In high school I was Zak because of how my former last name was pronounced.

I like when you meet Litizens outside of the matrix and don't know if you should call them by their real names or their lit monikers.

I found that it just kind of flows and either can get used...

I don't want to thread jack but your nickname thing works on so many different levels for me.
Of course I get bear a lot, for obvious reasons.
I am beginning see nekked (naked) more, one generated in Ent-ese. It is special because it is Ent-ese.
And then there is the fact that my name here is Hugo. It is actually a 'real' nickname of mine, dating long before the internet existed (except as maybe an academic toy) going to my college...erm...sports days.
Interesting thread.

Hugo

i have my own language? Wow...

For me there's ent (duh). Then there's those that come from other places. Lou, Bird, Loubert (bastardized combination of those two), Maynard, saddlesore, tank, cutestuff (only one person is allowed that one, and he has his own name in return  ), twink, Iarena, Devka, wooly... There are more, but those ones are the most common. Each one of them also has a reason behind them.

i love them all.

Luckily, my real life name has only one nickname.

my lit name just doesn't lend to nicknames except "sexy" and stuff like that.

Yeah, I should be in bed.

can I call you shang-a-lang ? ;)

Nock names are lovely. I was friends with the most charming australian, had a huge crush on him in fact and he used to call me bunny. The words 'lo bunny. Would send shivers down my spine whenever I saw them typed.

Theres one guy who occassionaly calls me "V" now, try and call me that in real life and I'll bite your arm off (something to do with an old dowcy chaacter on corrie having the same name shornteneing going on) but typed, and from this person I find it rather endearing :D

my real life name doesn't get much nicknamage. I mean, I get called by a shotened version of my name all the time, I know I'm in trouble if I get my full name used, especially if my first, middle, maiden and current last name get used!

And English Lady really only has EL as a shortening. I like being called "lady" though. Makes me feel all cultured, like :)

Oh and my husband calls me some wicked names sometimes, but thats just to get me into his bed ;)

I never expected nicknames, I chose the id 'Matriarch', because it seemed appropriate after working many years in a male-dominated environment (radar and electronics), and living for 30 years in an all male home environment (husband, two sons AND a male dog).

What I didn't expect was for 'Matriarch' to be shortened to 'Mat', but I'm glad it was, because I love it. (It's the same as my youngest son's name, and it makes me grin every time anyone calls me Mat.).

Somehow (thank you dear Becca for starting it off), I have acquired the designation 'Auntie' within the AH, and it is happily used (and accepted), by a growing number of the younger members of our family. Should any of my nieces and nephews call me that in real life I'd take great exception, but on here, it resonates with true affection.

Queenie. I'm not sure if it was Bel or Abs who started it, but again, it makes me grin enormously, as do all the jokes that surround that particular epithet.

And how could I not mention Vella's wonderful 'Matski'. I laughed out loud the first time I saw that, and now I'd feel deprived should she stop using it.

I do not have the same affection for Hobbit.
Thank you Abs.

I seem to have one of those un-nick-able handles.

'Tis a tad tricky, when the name is already 4 letters short....but I'm sure there are those amongst us who could rise to the challenge. ;)

I believe we used Merry & Pippin in Milwaukee -- but I'm not sure which was you and which was Logo. :D

Some "real" names come easier. Others I will always stumble over.

I prefer "Imp" to any nickname I've ever had -- but that's probably 'cause I adore the people using it.

Yes. :)

It was just much more familiar for me to call Vella, Lucky and Mat by those names than by their real ones. That's how I think of them, yes?

I'm sure the waiters, etc., probably got a grin at all the nicknames., though.

As for Cloudy, I've been called that forever....a little girl, so answering to it isn't a problem.

Don't have many others....well, "Pat," but my mother is the only one allowed to call me that - I hate it. ;)

(and "Imp" just fits you perfectly. :D )

I was called Kitten by an ex from college. He said it's because I like to play with things that dangle, too true.

The first time anyone called me DK, it kind of shocked me. I've never had a "handle" online and it was really nice. I still get a grin when I see it.

In real life, I hate what my family calls me and threaten them anytime I bring a friend over if they even think of using it.

Bum? Heh.

Could only have come from a brit... :)

It's that rhyming thing we do...

Liar, Liar your bum's on fire!
your hair sticks up like telephone wire.

Or something like that. I've not said/heard it since being about 10!

Liar, Liar, pants on fire
Sitting on a telephone wire!

My husband calls me "Kitten"... the "SK" thing cracks me up still because I'm a big Stephen King fan and always think of him now when I see someone address me as "SK"

other than that I haven't been 'round long enough to warrant a nickname, it seems... *sigh*... ;)

Huh, we say "Liar, liar, pants on fire" in the US. At least that's how we said it when I was a kid.

I've never really had any nicknames. I guess the closest was when ent called me Tommy once. I like it.
