I hope that someone gets my, I hope that someone gets my... Message in a Bottle

No, that never occured to me, either. But The Police-- and the Talking Heads-- really changed the way music got produced. The artists felt more comfortable about leaving blank spaces in. You could say they reminded everyone of the value of negative space...

I really like The Shins, they seem to be very consistent in making good, emotionally satisfying music. My hipster neighbors gave me A Look when I said that-- evidently, because they had one song in "Garden State" they got a reputation for having kiddie fans. I gave them A Look right back. The lyrics are too intertwined with the melodies to make any sense when they're quoted... gotta listen.

I've been listening to a lot of The Shins lately. With some Modest Mouse and a smattering of others thrown in for good measure. My son cycles through a lot of Talking Heads music.

I have a mix that I titled "Thoughtful" -- Arcade Fire, Shout Out Louds, Flaming Lips, Shins, Belle and Sebastian, the Pixies, I am Kloot.

I like a country twang-- a touch of the dirt road.

Haven't heard of Arcade Fire, Shout Out Louds, or I am Kloot that I know of. I listen to college radio in the car and hear great music I sometimes never know by who because of the way the playlist runs and my drive time. Then I forget to go to the website to look it up.

I put a lot of my kids music on my iPod. They've introduced me to great stuff. Doing chores and things I use shuffle play and am always looking at it to see what's on.

Oh, if you like a country twang you might take a listen to The Notting Hillbillies (Mark Knopfler's in it) - Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time. Maybe more of a cowboy feel than country, though.

....But although they shared some of the reggae influences, I never saw them as a Police copycat.

Probably poorly communicated on my part. The first time I heard a Men at Work song, I thought it was the Police. And I'm a musician, for chrissakes! I should've known better.

Love the comment about negative space, which, I think, sums up the early Police sound.

I do love Mark Knopfler!

Not to threadjack this with the actual topic or anything, but does anyone know some song lyrics with this basic message?

"Anyone who could be so pigheaded as to withdraw support from an entire household just because of a minor conflict with a single member is a petty little shit head and probably deserves a dose of fire ants."

There's my message. It should be put, I think, in a bottle which formerly held laxatives, and floated on a sea of blood.

Little sensitive about that this week. Thanks for your brainstorms.

'Hey Jude'? (If a reconciliation is a possiblilty.) I'm just thinking of the line 'Hey Jude, don't make it bad..." I don't remember what the rest of the song is about.

Yeah... some of my subtle sledgehammer irony at work there... *grins*

DZ, it's an interesting question. Until a few days ago reconciliation was completely within reach. I'm an optimist; I always figure that petty dramas get set aside during an actual crisis - a medical problem, a death, that sort of thing. I have been disappointed very seldom on this point, but it has happened occasionally.

Until late last week, Hey Jude would have been a good choice. Now I'm leaning more toward something by, oh, say, the Dead Kennedys or Insane Clown Posse.
