Hello all! I've been seeing this guy for about a month now. He's really into D&D, shadowrun, and other roleplaying games. I know next to nothing about them and don't want to nag him with endless questions about it...although I am very curious about what he does. Thanks...

there are diff type and diff ways to play it but most every PnP game is played the same way.

ok...this is gonna sound really stupid...but....how does the kind of roleplaying he does work? is it like sexual roleplaying (like in the bedroom?) I know he does it with a bunch of his friends (guys, i think). is it scripted? i'm really intrigued...

Okay the game is played with dice 4,6,8,10x2,20,and 100 sided dice
you choose from different classes and races when makeing your character. depending on what edition he plays 1,2or3 these are different
in 1and 2 only sertin races can be certin classes but in 3 anyone can be anything
your basic rases are human, elf, half elf, halfing, gnome, dwarf, ogre.
your classes are theif bard paladin archer ranger cleric druid monk mage wizard sorcorer others i cna't think of off the top of my head, depending on your weapons, armor, magic etc... you roll the 20 sided die to see if you hit your oponent if batteling or if they hit you. then you role whatever die corasponds to your magic/weapon. to do damage to them

but the game is more about becomeing the character you made then it is about figting. so you have different skils, for instant the theif and bard can steal do acrobats back stab hide in shadows and other stuff. so it you want to hide inthe shadows the dungeonmaster will toll the die if it's over a sertin number you succeded and hid so noone can see you, now you can sneek in a place and steal stuff.

the game isn't that complicated it's just hard to explain. easyist thing to do is ask your boyfriend if you can read one of the books use the players hand book first then the DM's guide.

it's all on papper and in your head, just a bunch of people sitting around, you basicly say to the room. I'm walking downt he coridor.

the dm will tell you, the coridor is 10 meters long there is a door 5 meters down on your left, pictures hand ever 3 meters on the right side. so then you respond with, I walk over to the door and listen to see what is behind it. you may go through or need to pick the lock. It's actualy boring to watch lol

one way you can learn about rpg in particularly via a computer is a series of games titled Baulders Gate. each game in this series is based on AD&D rules and comes complete with tutorials instruction manuel and has hint books available.

it is a great series both of you could enjoy together...who knows maybe you can even kill a few trolls ! (no pun intended)

When I met my husband, he was a gamer. Eventually, after ALOT of prodding, he got me to try it. While I am not an avid fan of it, I have done like 3 campaigns.

A campaign is what they call it when they start something new. The DM (dungeon master) usually puts alot of work and thought into what he wants the people to do, where he wants them to go, what goals he wants them to attain. Then, he lets the char's loose. They run around amuk, and hopefully end up in the same place as where the DM wants them to be.

There are fights, which is where the dice come into play. (I just roll the dice they tell me to, and tell em the number) Those are usually when I drift off into la-la land. In between, you role play, where you take on the role of a fictious char. I usually just play a flirty girl. Though, for guys, it's that whole, Let's be bigger and badder then the last one, thing. It is usually set in medieval times, fantasy, swords and stuff.

Anyway, there it is from a girls prospective. I hope that helps a bit.


Oh, and never ever touch his dice in front of the others. It's like some bizarre ritual with them. They just don't work right of someone else touches them.

i don't go for the bigger badder guy... i always choose to be psycotic, this way mind controle has less affect on me.


and good girl you need to know of strengh, dexterity, intelegence, wisdom, charisma, there are 80 points to disribute (e3 rules) and if your a wizard you need more intelegence, if paladin stregth and wisdome, theif dexterity.

as chris said Baldurs gate is a good PC game to teach you the basics, Planescape: Torment, ice wind dale, Heart of Winter are others that may help you out so will Never winter nights when it comes out. (this one will help alote more) there is antoher PnP game called Vampire the Masquerade, this is a PC game too that would be another good one to check out,

the last game i played (that is still supose to be going on)

I am a sorserer (will be a sorserer/monk come my next level edition 3 rules) i'm a half elf but my character insists that he is half elf and half dragon, his mother was taken by a dragon who was later killed by "him" lol I am being stalked by a dragon slayer that noone can see but me.. it's fun freaking out for no aparent reason add's spice to the game. and i carry a farret with me... KiKi my sister lol we had the same father so she is a half dragon as well,

I miss playing probly why i'm talking so much about it lol

As gilly said, don't touch the dice. She jinxes mine all the time, I tell ya'. Actually, I have my own set now, she has hers, and it's all good. Our current campaign (the one where Gilly is a pain in the ass, especially 'cause my char likes her, and she knows it, and still gives him hell, lol) is a Forgetten Realms one. I usually take rangers, so this cleric's a bit different for me.

We haven't gotten to play much of late, and I took a couple years off from it, so I understand where you're comin' from Fly.

Gilly and I own a mud on-line that we like to roleplay on. I think she's a bit more comfy roleplaying where se doesn't have to see the people's faces. Come to think of it, so am I. Far less likely to break out into laughing or something. ;o)~

And Good Girl, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Sounds like there's a few players all ready here, and I've been playing for close to 9 years now myself, so I might be able to offer up some info.

Yup, I think it's been a month. This post will put me at a whoopin' 25 total. I find it interesting to paruse, but seldom post so far. You all are prolly lucky for that. :-D

Let's see, as fly said, it's really not as hard as it looks. When Gilly started up, she had no clue what half her 'stats' meant, but you're right, he'll probably be flattered that you're taking an interest. I was when Gilly started to play D&D, and was even more exicted when she gave mudding a shot.

Basically, just pretend that you are the character. Don't worry so much about the 'info' on score sheets, just play along, and ask for help when you need it. That's how I got started, because I didn't know what I was doing either. Tried looking over the guys' shoulders for awhile and they finally told me to sit in, citing that it was easier to learn by doing as opposed to simply watching dice tumble.

The role play is seldom 'scripted', though the person running it often controls the flow of things. They lay out the basic elements, and then responds to the things that the players do in the game. Everyone has their own styles, mind you. It just takes a bit of time to get used to everyone.
