I cry cutting onions.
No matter what tricks I try, the tears simply will not stop!
Onions, shallots, spring onions, onion chives... makes no difference.

Even scuba gear doesn't stop the eye-watering.

I'm broken :(

It depends on how strong the onion is, which depends on the variety and how alkali the soil that it was grown in was. I think it happens to me less now that I wear reading glasses when I cook.

I will have to pay attention next time I cut an onion at this point I'm not sure I would even notice but there is no way I am omitting the onions so I'm going to chop it. It is like when you have to grind on something and the sparks are hitting your arm, you don't really notice.

When it does happen- without even thinking about ot, after I get done cutting the onions I wash my hands and then my face.

You should cut them underwater. The onions in the water - not you!

Don't buy one of these:

You have to peel the onion to make this work properly, so your eyes will still water.

I does not matter... The gases from the onion escape.

Suggestions (cause it kills me too)

1. Use a sharp knife. The sharpness of the knife matters. It's either cutting through the cells of the onion or crushing them.... Crushing releases more of the gas.

2. If it does happen, after you've suffered. stick your head in the freezer (no I'm not being morbid... So stop it) the cold will freeze the gas caught in your eyes. I know it sounds odd, but try it.

3. Que came up with the third.. Wash.

my hubby uses safety glasses with side shields. it's hilariously looking, but he swears by it.

Try holding a slice of bread between your lips.

If Gianbatistta is at home and available he will do them for me ( to save me redoing eye makeup. ) otherwise I fine slice in a hand processor if feeling enthusiastic, ( then do my other vegetables in that too). I also try and buy slightly less pungent onions when knowing I am using a lot. The very cheapest, sharpest white ones seem the most upsetting to my eyes. Otherwise I try to make sure to do my onion prep before getting made up. :).

I've tried all of these but nothing works :(
I even thought maybe it's a skin absorbtion issue and tried gloves.

As much as possible I make my son cut them for me, but I still tear up from across the room! And as soon as they hit the heat of the pan the tears start up again.

It's a shame, because onions are super-yum and indespensible for many meals.

just breathe through your damned mouth.

seriously.

it's that simple.

It only fatal if it can kill you.

I only use shallots and that doesn't happen to me then.
