GEORGE BUSH LEFT IN MINORITY, AWAITS RUSSIAN SUPPORT
For the first time, after George Bush was elected US President, his plans have been threatened to collapse. Democratic majority in US Congress disapprove his NMD programme. There are three arguments against it: too expensive, China and Russia.
In the face of this “velvet revolution” in Congress, Bush decided to make sensational steps: to ask for support in Russia. At least, the “New York Times” reports about it.
This so-called “velvet revolution” happened last week. Senator Jeffords left Republican Party and became independent. As a result, Democratic Party, which does not support the NMD programme, gained the majority in US Congress.
Democrats decided immediately to put George Bush on his place and used NMD programme for these aims. It was announced, that Bush’s plans, connected with National Missile Defence, were under question.
According to the “New York Times”, George Bush decided to restore status quo of the NMD issue, using Russian support. That means the White House is ready to buy missile systems “S-300” and to integrate them into the missile shield over the Europe. But only if NMD plans are supported by Russia and ABM treaty of 1972 is denounced. There are also some other encouragement measures, foreseen by George Bush.
Though officials at Russian Defence Ministry told PRAVDA.Ru, that they were sceptical about this information. Although the integration of the “S-300” system into the NATO defence infrastructure is technically feasible, it would require solid capital investments.
Officials of the Russian Arms Export Committee told PRAVDA.Ru, that such experience did exist, although the systems created according to these principles had never been used on the territory of Russia. This industry is mainly export-oriented.
