I left work two hours ago and I am still too pissed off to type worth a damn.

Teaching sucks big time when you administrators are fucking ignorant assholes.

I have been having a run in with the same student for over a week now because I wrote him up for cursing. Another teacher kicked him out of her room so he walked down the hall, fuck this, fuck that, to hell with her, etc... I happened to hear it, so...

Anyhow the kid blames me, hey I can live with that and deal with that, nothing new.

This morning he sits in class (block scheduling, 90 minuets, too fucking long) drawing instead of doing what the rest of the class is doing. I asked him to stop. He didn't I warned him again a few minuets later, he didn't stop. Finally I sent him to the office. Where they didn't do a fucking thing but send him back to my class.

Now the little shit is laughing at me, ha ha, I didn't get into trouble. He didn't know that a school resource officer, real cop, was standing behind him. I tried my best to ignore him, but he wouldn't let me. Finally I got up and left the room. Got our behavior dude and gave the student back to him.

The kid went off big time.

A little later one of my bosses, sort of a vice-principal told me the kids mom was there, and did I want to talk to her? No I didn't. He talked me into it. The mom could not understand why I was picking on her kid. What was wrong with the child laughing in class? Isn't he allowed to even smile?

(the kid is 17, big, smart, and evil)

I said that I can not allow a student to deride me in front of other students. If I did I would lose control and might as well quit.

She kept going on. I left.

Now, my blood pressure is already up. I am pissed at the world. My principle calls me into the office. He wants to tell me I dropped the ball. I made it personal when I told the mother I couldn't allow the kid to laugh at me in class. Oh I agreed with the stupid shit, told him he was right, all that good ol' crap. What I wanted to do was tell the bastard that if his people did what they were supposed to do in the first fucking place this would never have happened. You can't keep sending a kid who is pissed at a teacher back to class.

Anyhow. I am taking tomorrow off. Sick day. I can't let my blood pressure rise like that. Gotta little heart condition that doesn't like it. Now I have gotten it off my chest, time to let it go.

Soon.

Eep! And this is what I want to do with the rest of my life. I totally agree, you can't allow that kid to laugh at you in front of the entire class. Those mothers who blindly swear their kid could do no wrong are the worst. I wish I could offer up some advice but school policy is just too different district to district but I hope everything works it's self out or you find some solution for the problem.

Do they still have "in" school supension?.....or even out of school Suspension?.........
You know how they say ya live and learn....well I'm not proud to say it but I spent a few days in both when growing up..........From what I have heard times are harder now........My principal just about would kick the shit out of me.....I earned everything he gave me and more..........Made me think alot.......Kind of why I think I'm not dead or in jail now.....

If I could trun back time I wish I could have treated teachers much better.......You have a bitch of a job.....Not enough money for me to put up with little smart ass shits like the one your talking about.....

I have read your posts and know you have been at this for a long time........This is what you do..... Something brings you right back to teaching........Yea you got the little asshole today , I know you have seen before but what about all the other you taught and they learned something today...........?????.....

What would the world be like if you guys didn't mold our teens?......I mean alot of them scare me anyhow but man if someone didn't take the time with them we would be really fucked....

I don't want to say I was like him but I was a big asshole myself....***** will wake him up as it did for me......
Take a 3 day weekend and come back monday with you head up and think of the good your doing.......

Sorry you had a shity day Teach......................................

And by the way...I'm not sucking up to the teacher but cool av.

Sounds like me back in my Junior High years. And some of my high school days even. Damn, I must of been a pain in the ass back in the day.

Sorry to hear you had such a rotten day. Hopefully the student in question will cool off and you won't have many more problems from him in the future. Take tomorrow off and just relax. Three day weekend. Should be fun.

I'm not trying to get on your case or anything, but do you think it was the best idea in the first place to send a kid to the office just because he didn't do his work? I mean, was he disrupting the class, or was he simply drawing? I've been taight in my grad school classes that sending a kid to the office should be a LAST resport, and only if the child is disrupting others. Is it possible that you over-reacted because you have squared off against this kid and/or don't like him?

I agree with your frustration about having to deal with administrators who don't give a shit or who are incompetent; he shouldn't have been sent back to your class without repurcussions...the administration has to show support of its teachers in cases like this. Your principal should have supported you in front of the parent and student, and if he had a problem with the way you handled the situation, he could have said something to you about it afterwards. However, I would have agreed to talk with the student's mother when I had a chance and I would have diplomatically expained to her why he was sent to the office.

Wizard, a little note on suspension- in or out of school. Most kids who cause problems WANT suspension- it's positive reinforcement for their bad behavior.

Hmmmmm man I'm out of touch........We hated it......In school was the worst..........I kinda see what ya mean on out of school but my parents would beat my ass big time.........

Yes but nowadays it seems that there are many parents who expect the schools to discipline hteir kids for them- mind you, I said MANY, not ALL, so please- if you're a parent on this board I mean no disrespect....

Yea I know exactly what you mean......I see what the kids are like that my kids try to "Hang" with......A few years back due to medical reasons (Kidney transplant) we had to live in section 8 housing.........We saw our fair share of kids running wild while there parents drank or partied.....Cut there kids lose to play outside and do what they wanted where they wanted when they wanted.......Others chose to let the Tv and games babysit..........

It is a shame......I have a 12 year old and an 8 year old....I know who or where they are with any time other than school......

You have my sympathy. Teaching is hard enough without fucks like that in charge. Unfortunately, most people have no clue what you folks have to deal with. Has your administrator actually ever had to teach a classroom? I doubt it.

I'm sorry you had such a shitty day. After having the abolute pits of administrators (three different ones) last year, I understand your position.

I'm putting your post down as Reason #99 for loving my new school and Reason #1509 for staying in Kindergarten. The kids are 5, little, smart, and sweet.

I'll say a prayer for your substitute tomorrow. Have a relaxing refreshing day.

Okay, admittedly, the last experience I had with High School teachers was way back when I was the one pissing them off but, just to play Devils Advocate, if the kid was drawing instead of work then who truly gives two shits? He doesn't do the work, he doesn't learn, he gets the poor marks and you're workload is shortened. Seems to me you were looking for a fight.

EBW, you have to finish the rest of the sequence. He doesn't do the work, he doesn't learn, he gets the poor marks, your workload is shortened. His classmates follow his example. None of them learn, they bomb the standardized tests. Standardized test scores are printed in the paper. The teacher receives year end evaluation. Teacher is looking for a new job.

The alternative --- Teacher allows student to draw, administrator enters the classroom, sees student drawing ("off-task behavior") and teacher's evaluation is bad because instructional time was not maximized. Students weren't involved in learning. Teacher is looking for a new job.

You'll notice that the adminsitrator didn't disagree with his reprimanding the student, he disagreed with "how" it was stated to the parent.

My father was a Chemistry Professor at a small University in Texas. He finally retired after 25 years. It wasn't because he lost interest in teaching, it was because he go tired of "babysitting".

Every Christmas for as long as I could remember we had a tap on our phone. Seems that his students couldn't handle getting a well deserved F so they would resort to threatening him. My father also had at least four lawsuits that I can remember accusing him of discrimination (my father doesn't believe in discrimination. You got the grade YOU deserved). In the end he couldn't even accuse a student of cheating even if he saw it happen in front of his eyes.

I really feel for the teachers. The parents don't want to discipline their children, and when a teacher does it's "picking on them". How in the world can you teach a child responsibility when the parents/administration won't allow it? You can't. And then they wonder why kids are such disrespectful assholes.

A-ha! So your problem is more with the system than it is with the individual actions of anybody. Well then, I'm with you. All hate to the state! An anarchist with a bus pass is still an anarchist!

Actually, my problem is with the parents who have twisted and perverted our school systems to the point that they automatically attack a teacher rather than ask their child "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

My problem is not with the accountability measures and my problem isn't with the "maximization of instructional time." I was simply pointing out how their existence completely obliterates your arguement that letting a kid draw instead of teaching might be a good option.

Damn. I'm not used to having my arguments be completely obliterated. Partially, sure. This is going to take some recovery time.

Whoops. But that's besides the point, I didn't say it was a good option, just an option. Also, I wasn't really putting forth an opinion but just "playing Devil's advocate".

Man, you teachers are tough.

You caught me after 10 parent conferences. Still have my "serious teacher" face and deep, evil voice on.

Man, I remember that face but not the voice. In fact most of what my parents heard at P-T conferences was "You say your son is in my class? Odd, I don't remember a boy by that name."

Because you were MIA most of the time?

I am in the completely, totally, wonderfully, awesome position of having 12 students in my class. Completely impossible not to get to know them really well.

Still a little pissed...

Okay, time to give myself away here. If anyone in Charlotte is reading this, keep it to yourself please.

I work in an 'alternative school'. Part of the Charlotte school system. But my kids have been kicked out of regular schools for various reasons, gang activity, fighting, drugs, attacking teachers, bringing guns, swords, knives...

The students have to prove to us that they can re-enter regular school. So we also act as a gateway, kids from prison have to spend some time with us. I have kids coming and going all the time.

After four years at this site I know 7 kids who have been charged with 1st degree murder. Seven students of mine will spend the rest of their lives behind bars for killing someone. The last one did it a year ago Halloween. Hunted down someone who had popped him in the mouth and knocked out a few teeth. A good reason to kill someone.

I also know a hell of a lot of kids who have killed themselves, or have been killed by others.

My job is a major stress factory.

Anyhow this is one of the reasons why I can't let a kid sit and draw, or laugh at the teacher. I not only have to teach these kids history or psychology, but I also have to teach them how to fit into a regular classroom.

I have calmed down. I will enjoy my three day weekend. If anyone wants to make a big deal that a teacher from Charlotte posts on this board,(there is only one alternative high school, and I am the only social studies teacher, so hell it ain't gonna be hard to figure out who I am if you really want to) I will deny everything! :p

Thanks for the messages of support. You don't know how much they help.

Wow! That has to be the understatement of the day. I think teaching must be hard enough without taking on kids with such huge problems. And my bet is that you don't get paid any more than the teachers in the "regular" schools, either.

You have my respect. Definitely.

Saturday

I feel better today. Don't have to go to work. I will feel fine until tomorrow night, then I start dreading going back.

My wife has been after me for years to move on to a different school. Read my post above.

I can't help it. I love the kids I work with. Yes they are the bottom feeders. But every now and then I touch one (no not that way).

Every so often a kid I can't remember comes back to see me, and thank me. I often do not remember them because I see so many. Rare is the student who spends a whole year with us, they usually stay a quarter, a semester at the most.

It is like the title of the tread. I love my job, but I hate the people (staff) that I work with.
