I didn't know where it should go

I have posted a new story today. the title is 'Skeeter Bates Great Escape ch 02'.

I was very unsure of where it should post, which category would it fit in. I told the story mods to put it where they thought it best fit. They put it in interracial, where I think it will run into reader expectations it will not fulfill. I would have thought that it might go to mature, or to exotic couplings.
I hope some of you will take the time to scan over it and tell me if you agree that interracial is not the right category. I really don't trust my own judgement and would be grateful for your insight.

I'm so vain

I put it in my sig below.

Skeeter Bates Great Escape ch 02
Would like to hear your opinion.

I honestly don't know what the best category would be. It was obviously placed in Interracial for the one scene near the end.

Really, I think you're going to have a hard sell no matter where it ends up. This is a far harder-edged story than most people are expecting around here, with rough characters that have been beaten down and kicked in the teeth by life.

If I had to make a choice, I think I might have went with Novels and Novellas, putting the first chapter there as well. The readership numbers would have been dismal, but as far as not turning the expectations of the readers upside down, that seems like the best choice. The catch-all nature of that category means that readers don't really know what to expect when they open a story there.

Erotic Couplings is the same, but there are more than two people having sex in this one, and to me, that doesn't really fit.

That's the best I can offer, I'm afraid.

Thanks, both -- I don't display sigs or avatars. No offense, but I don't like the clutter.

Yep, I'm not sure where it fits, either. Novels and Novellas seems like the best catch-all. Once again this seems like a good argument for just a system of tags (like SOL), or a more general category like Straight Sex (as at Lush). Interracial's as good as anything but I have a feeling you may take some heat from readers since as Dark said, that's only the last scene and it wasn't your choice anyway.

How about mature

Do you guys think it would fit better and offer what was expected in mature? It seems to me that is closer to where it belongs then interracial.

I don't know... There are a few standards in Mature that the readers are expecting:

  • Stories about actual mature couples, as the title of the category alludes to.
  • May-December love stories, as the category description says.
  • Cougar ( and the gender reversal ) stories.

There's a bit of a subset of Cougar where the younger character pursues the older in a purely sexual fashion, but those don't go over nearly as well. That's the closest to your story.

I don't think you would get any better of a reaction in Mature than Interracial, because the story is just too far outside the norms of what readers are expecting.

The hard edge to your characters and the storyline are just a tough sell.

I actually didn't get a mature "vibe" from it. Was the guy that much older than Skeeter? Sorry if you said it in the story; I admit I skimmed more than read, as I had an appt this morning.

Don't ever rely on the Lit staff to categorise your stories, folks. they are just people, and honestly not any more educated than the rest of us.

Put it into novels/novellas, Mikey, and tag the hell out of it.

I really need to find a category and write for it. My next story is a fem-dom sy-fy

Where in the hell will I put that. It has a very strong woman who has a man she hates under her complete control. The story takes place both on the moon as well as in Florida work camps.

Any suggestions on this one?

Why wouldn't anything not GM that was set on the moon not go in Sci-Fi (or possibly Romance)?

That's my question

It is a revenge story. An older woman gains complete control of the man who raped one of her family members.

It starts on the moon but she brings him back to earth to pay for his sins. She has him in bondage of a sort but I am not sure it would please the readers in bdsm. It is a fem-dom piece for sure but It doesn't fit in fetish either. I think I am going to post it in sy-fy and see what happens.

UUUUUSE YOUR TAAAAGGGSSSS!

The tagging system on lit is primitive as all fuck compared with some other versions, but it will make a difference.

I'd say sci-fi for the moon story. SF is one of those categories that with the proper notes and/or tags, can have a broad range of content.

I'll give them a try

Are you talking about the ten boxes that you have to fill out when you post a story? I do use those. but I don't seem to be getting much in the way of results.
Are you talking about something different?

There is a hierarchy of macro, overriding categories here. Revenge and older and domination and rape are not among the macros (and rape isn't permitted as a category). Sci Fi, Incest, Nonhuman, GM. These are macro categories.

Those are the ones. The principle, obviously, is that most stories encompass more than one defining element. My one story here, for instance, is lesbian-- but the narrator is black, so it could be interracial, the other woman is much younger, so it could be mature, and she looks like a boy so it could be trans, and it's my narrator's first time with a woman so it could be first time. So I tagged my story with those things.

Tags should feed in to search results, and maybe they do a little bit more since Manu's last code changes. At some point, they will become useful and your efforts will be rewarded.

There's no reason to avoid the Sci-Fi&Fantasy category if the story has those elements. ( at least from a pure "Will this piss off the readers" standpoint )

The category is used to seeing elements of every other category on the site woven into the plots. Unlike some other categories, they do pay attention to author's notes, and don't use them as a flag to bomb the story without reading it.

Just mark any edgier stuff like Incest, GM, rape, far edge fetishes like watersports, etc. in an author's note at the beginning, and you'll be all good.

Most of the readers in the category won't even blink an eye at Fem Dom, and it sounds to me like that one would be easy enough to hint at in the description line, since it's such a major part of the story.

When your story has spaceships, werewolves, magic, future tech, or anything similar there's always an easy category selection that won't get you blasted because it's "in the wrong category".

The question becomes whether you want to risk a more 'real world' category that might also apply for the sake of increased views. Some will be okay with them, some will shun them, and some will outright hate on you.

Non consent/reluctance may work for this one.
