Got a band you know of that you think are the absolute goods and you want to let people know, here's your chance. I wanna hear about bands I might not otherwise get hip to, local favorites, the obscure but cool. Before they break and end up on MTV.
To start things off, I offer up Sweden's very own "Demons". [note: They may be HUGE in Sweden, but they're still pretty underground here in the states ]. I caught these cats a couple of years ago on tour when they played this tiny rat hole of a bar in West Oakland called the Port Lite. The kind of place where you really shouldn't pogo because you'll smack your head on the celing and the grizzled locals and merchant seamen there all week raise an eyebrow when the weekend rock & roll crowd arrives for the live music. [Haven't been back in a while, not sure they even still do music.]
Had no idea who they were, were actually there to see a different band who never showed. "Demons" were a beautiful lightning strike. They play full-on 4/4 rock & roll, pure and loud and fast. Forget The Strokes, don't want a case of The Hives. I sacrifice on the "Demons" altar.
When I saw them, they were all wearing matching Gearhead Records (their U.S. label) jackets like some latter-day 50's street gang playing punk. Their website lists MC5, The Damned, The Misfits, The Stones, The Cramps, and a bunch of others as influences, and that's the well they're drawing from for sure. Live, they are a lifesaving drink for thirsty guitar lovers. Hair piled high and their Creepers laced up, they blew the roof off that tiny little club.
I'm KICKING MYSELF STILL because about a month or two ago they were in town again and I FUCKING MISSED THEM AT MY FAVORITE CLUB, the Stork Club. I was sure they were playing Wednesday...but it was TUESDAY!!!! GAH!
It sucks because they lilve in Stockholm. But...Gearhead is out of Oakland so any time they come to the Left Coast, they play in town.
Who's next?
