Wow. I just read from a respectable news source (Aol blurb) that a group of Americans are heading over to London to eventually go to Iraq to be taken as human hostages in case war breaks out.

That's dedication to your beliefs.

I was still a whippersnapper when the first gulf war broke out. I'm not sure if there was so much disention about the motivation and validity of the war then but were there any human shields in 90'?

What would you be a human shield for?

Human shields is a great way to thin the herd of hippies that don't know any better.

Loved ones, and big trees.

I'd chain myself to a live oak or a giant sequoyah if they were going to chop it down. Of course, they'd use bolt cutters to snip me out of the chains and then they'd brutalize me, but oh well.

No there wasn't this much dissension last time around. Things were much more straight forward then, Iraq had marched into another country. The human shields last time were not volunteers, but innocent civilians rounded up and forced into sites.

If the human shields really want to send a message they will draw straws and have a couple of them live.

Then get some camcorders and to videotape the carnage.

That would really be something to watch. It would hit home with a lot of people.

Let 'em, the bombs will still blow up the buildings.

Dead hippies in a country that doesn't want them there.

that's a shame.

Hippies believe in free sex. I'm surprised they wouldn't be more popular.

Human Shields..

The minute they put their boots down on enemy territory to obstruct the forces of the US, they are traitors for providing aid and comfort to the enemy. Their demise will be of their own choosing. Their legacy will be of those that sided with the enemy in the past.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." --Samuel Adams

* I will be a human shield for family, friends, and country.

What if it is the country that has become the traitor to it's own ideals?

Our country was founded on the idea of a social contract and a lot of people believe this administratio is doing nothing to support that contract.

These people who are going to their death knowingly by acting as human shields have every opportunity to effect change in policy here. They have the right to free speech, assembly, demonstrate, however they choose to get their point across.

Traveling to Iraq to act as human shields is high drama intended to sway public opinion. I have serious doubts that they will see anything positive come from such a stunt. Intentionally placing themselves in the hands of the Iraqi government is in my mind an act of treason, comparable to offering one's services to any other foreign government.

They are defending innocent civilians not soliders. And they aren't placing themselves in the hands of the Iraqi government anymore than the three congressmen that went to Iraq to establish a dialouge. They are going to represent the sizeable number of people in America and around the world that are opposed to war.

I believe it was Betsy Ross who first thought this up, wasn't it? Britain wanted to exert their influence from afar, and the fortitude of one woman changed the mind of a dedicated British officer.

Maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe it was somebody during the civil war?

I'm sure somebody knows. I can't think straight on all the meds.
