Funny, though, in Washington all the pols from both Parties go to the same functions, eat at the same restaurants, frequent the same tailors/wine merchants/Mercedes dealers/Bloomingtons, etc. Makes a true cynic wonder how much of this "partisan" bitterness is all about smoke and mirrors . . .

In some countries, it's not all smoke and mirrors. In Austria, traditionally, Reds (Socialists) and Blacks (Catholic/Populists) practiced a spoils system where, when one party took over, the partisans of the other were out of work and displaced by those of the new regime. Little wonder that people got disgusted with them, though Haider's Freedom Party was no solution. Talk about class warfare, though.
