Hi,

I have two submissions and I've reworked them since. I want to upload the edited versions, but don't know how to. Any suggestion? I don't know if this has been asked before, I'm a newbie. Thanks in advance.

Post each one as though it were a new story, but in the title box put EXACTLY the same title as before with <- EDITED> on the end (without the chevrons). In the Notes box put <Story edited, please post new version. Thank you.> again without the chevrons.

Newbies always ask the same questions.

To Mr. Snooper,

Thanks for the tip, and for being patient with us newbies. :)

How to say this.... thread closed?

I don't think you have to put the "exact" title, especially if it's long. Some titles are long enough already that the system wouldn't let you add the "edited." It's the "edited" that's the most important to put in the head box.

I've ran up against that limitation myself. Since then, I've always included the Lit ID# ( the number at the end of the url when you open your story ) in the "notes" field of the submission, even if I can fit the EDIT onto the end of the original title.

That assures there's no question what story/chapter I'm editing. I also tend to detail exactly what I'm changing, and what I want left alone. When fixing errors in the text, I note that I want the original title, description, keywords, etc. to remain, only replacing the text with the updated submission.

Never hurts to cover all the bases and make things as clear as possible for the moderators.

You don't. Since the problem is solved and the topic closed, several people can now use this thread to argue and abuse each other. One of the regulation argumentative posters is here already.

Ouch!

Actually, I was going to edit and repost. I DID read the FAQ about it, and I know I'll keep my votes and ratings (or so it said), but I have some other questions for those who've edited before.

1) Does it change the post date or do you keep your original post date?
2) Do you REALLY keep all your votes and scores?
3) Does it show up on the new stories list? (I should think not, but...)
4) Have you gotten different responses from your readers once you've edited?

1. In theory, no. And it didn't happen to one of mine where they had married the wrong text with a title/author and they had to straighten it out a week after the initial posting. (Curious why this is important, though.)

2. Yes, or so people who have done it have claimed in posts here.

3. In theory, no--and it didn't happen with the one of mine they had to rework.

4. Don't know. Will be interested in responses you get. I'd normally suggest that no one's going to go back and reread and notice, but I've had comments on changes I've made to stories recast when moved from one site to another and also have gotten comments reporting repeated readings, so maybe you'll get some interesting testimonials.

I guess I want to keep my post date because this is a chapter that a couple of people have taken off this site and claimed as their own. Honestly. This chapter was crap. I just posted the first 3 chapters on a whim. So now I'd like to go back and edit them so they're at least a little better and more in sync with the rest of my story.

(I know we've had the debate about copyright stuff. I just don't want someone to claim that I stole THEIR story because THEIR post date is sooner than MY repost date.) Any ideas on that?

Otherwise, I'll just leave it. Not worth the trouble...except it will bother me.

I've edited a couple of my older stories.

1) kept original post date, no change
2) kept all votes and scores
3) not listed as a new story
4) no one noticed but me ;)

What I would love to do is change the titles on a couple of the first stories I posted. But that would change too much - people would think it was a new story, it would change in the alphabetical listings, etc.

It isn't really that big of a deal.

:)

Sounds like a good reason.

Thanks Sarahh. I know no one will notice it, but I'm kinda compulsive. It bothers me... I found a typo in my last post ARRRGGGH I know no one will notice, but, it's not for them. It's for ME!

Actually, a very wise and wonderful author named Colleen Thomas (Colly, who passed away two years ago) once told me to never edit my old submissions.

She said if I kept updating my earlier works I would never be able to tell how I'd grown as a writer.

She was correct, of course. And I have kept copies of my first submissions here, but for ME I really needed some minor (and in one case major) editing.

Wise words. Maybe I'll just edit them in my own folders at home. I think I can see some growth already... thanks to everyone here who has helped me.

Thanks for the advice.

You're very welcome.

I'm just passing down what others have taught me.

(Hey - what news about the idiots who plagiarized your stuff? Has that been resolved? I posted on her blog and reported him but haven't checked back to see.)

I've never edited one of mine for reposting, either. Onward and upward--and this isn't the New Yorker.

Well.. the guy has had all my stuff removed. The blog... I dunno. The stuff's still there. I think more people should it out because it looks like she's stealing stories from here and then illustrating them with some porno visuals, claiming they're "fantasies." There's a lot of stuff that I don't think is her stuff on that blog. I didn't look through it very carefully because I was a little irritated.

Did you post a comment on her blog? Easy to do and you don't have to join.

Good to hear about the guy on quizilla, though.

:)

I also found this one... It has stolen from me and Daniellekitten... those I got from just skimming. I noted that the site is similar but somehow I can't navigate on this one.

Sigh. Whatdoyado? I'll send this DK's way, though. I get the feeling she'll be rather unhappy about it.
