Bit of background ...

I like playing computer games, but find as I get a little older that games that require fast hand-eye coordination, or constant clicking of the mouse for hours, are tiring or difficult to play. So I was glad to hear of a web site "The Older Gamers".

I went along to that. Well, fuck me if they didn't define "older gamer" as someone over 25 years old! (see their forum main page).

Well, sorry, but to me "over 25" isn't old! Over 60, maybe.

So then I read that here at Lit the "Mature" category is quite popular with older readers. "Great!" I thought. "Stories about people maybe 55+ to 80". But no, the stories I have read so far are for, maybe, a 40-year old fucking a 20-year old. Is it just me, or is this just "adults"? Not "matures"?

Have I just stumbled across a non-representative sample?

Put it like this. I wrote a story about a 50+ year old man having an affair with a 20-year old (The Girlfriend). I just put that into Erotic Couplings. It didn't occur to me to put it into the Mature category, but it looks like it would be at home there.

If you are wondering, it is: http://www.literotica.com/s/the-girlfriend-3

Is the general consensus that once you are 40 you are "old", or "mature"? And if so, where does "middle aged" fit in? Or plain "adult"?

There are two things I've noticed about the Mature category. First, it's often about a relationship with a 10+ year age difference between the characters. In fact it often seems higher -- 18 yo women with 50 yo men, for example. Second, it's about people maybe 40+ yo getting involved with each other. In that case I think the "mature" is less about the age itself and more about what the character could have experienced in that time -- marriage, children, jobs, divorce, etc.

I write a few "mature" stories. Usually they're a cougar and a man who is barely legal. Unless they are posted to First Time, they go to Mature. On the other hand, I have written quite a few first person stories where the woman is described as being much younger than I, and these go to E/C, Anal, etc. It might be sort of a double standard.

Mature is fairly low on the heirarchy, and if a story fits elsewhere, it wil probably go to that category.

What she said with an addendum. People are living longer and better so being 50 isn't oh man you are old and we are retiring your old ass now. I remember a decade or so ago there was a report on middle age moving to being older. I don't think it was in reference to buying the sports car or younger girlfriend. Still, if guys are living into their 90's and plus along with still able to get it up and fuck someone I don't see why mature has to have a definite age.

Think about it this way, to a twenty year old forty is old and mature. To a thirty year old sixty or even seventy is old and mature. Considering most of the readers on this site are under twenty five, well maybe who knows they don't list ages when they visit, being forty makes for mature.

Doesn't mean the person is actually mature, they are just at an age that people say, hey that person is mature.

Guilty :(

It should be there, as that's the primary dynamic of the category, see below.

This ----^ If the maturity (age) dynamic is the hook of the story, put it in Mature, if it's two young people doing one old person, put it in Group, unless the old person is really aged.

Doesn't mean the person is actually mature, they are just at an age that people say, hey that person is mature.

This as well----^

Mature is a state of mind that's earned.

According to several different sources the average age of readers/writers on this site is more like 50 if memory serves. And male.

And don't ask me about mature. I might grow old but I'm never growing up.

Perspective is everything. First time I heard the term MILF, I thought it perfectly reasonable. I thought it’s how young men referred to attractive women significantly older than them, perhaps even literally mothers of their friends. Then I realized sixty-year-old men call twenty-five-year-old women MILF, and I’m not even sure motherhood is involved. Now that’s funny.

No. If youre 20, 30 is old. If youre 30, life is over at 40.

I have five stories in the Mature category.

I don't state the ages of the characters, but most have retired and have grandchildren. The age differences? Generally they are of similar ages.

Chronological age is quantifiable, attitudinal and emotional maturity is extremely relative. You can be annoyingly grumpy and miserable when you're 20 (see Emo) or be happy as a kid with a new toy when you're 70.

I saw a porn site once with the title 'Young Chicks, Old Dicks'. Most of the dudes looked to be 40 at best, which pretty much sums it up. :D
