Have you ever done an afterlife story?

Your characters have died, naturally, nothing tragic.

Now you have it in your head to do something with them after they've been reunited in some sort of afterworld.

'Hi, we've been waiting a long time for you.'

'Wow, you look great, you've got your 40 year old body back and not the 60 year old one when you died. What is this place anyways?'

'We don't really know, but no one ages, there is no sickness and no one has to eat, drink or exercise.'

My most recent story is built around a girl in a relationship who couldn't let go after death.

I am presently writing something called Ten Thousand Steps for a patron/community server reward, and it’s about halfway through its planned 10k word length. Entire story other than intro/epilogue take place in the afterlife over a ten year span

Yes, I wrote a Fetish story for Halloween a few years ago called 'The Pervert Ghost' narrated by a young man who is struck by lightning and killed in a thunderstorm. After several months of wandering around Adelaide, South Australia as an invisible ghost that nobody could see, hear or sense and not knowing what he was going to do or what would happen next, he is in the city on the day that would have been his 19th birthday he sees some attractive female office workers in a department store heading into the fitting rooms to try on clothes, realizes he can follow them in there and watch them undress. From there the voyeurism increases more and more as he watches pretty women in their most private and intimate moments all over town.

While a clear example of Grade A wish fulfilment intended to appeal to voyeurs - being able to go wherever he likes, do whatever he likes and see whatever he likes with no danger of being caught and facing consequences for his actions (how can you punish a dead man), not to mention endless endurance and none of life's problems - I did make his reaction realistic at the start. At first he is in denial about his death, wishing he could be alive again, feeling upset for his bereaved family and friends, wondering if he will see late relatives to cross him over, trying and failing to meet other ghosts to see what this afterlife is all about, and boredom such as secretly going into a nursing home to watch soap operas with the elderly residents.

However some category readers don't seem to appreciate the supernatural crossing over into their territory (Incest Taboo and Romance are two good examples) and it seemed Fetish too, as the story rated poorly.

I wrote a 3 part series about what happens when you are dead.

I tried to write it with some dark humour in there.

My Halloween 2023 story, The Greatest Witch Hunter, fits this bill, especially at the ending.

The story begins in modern day Salem, when the great-grandson of a famous witch hunter visits on vacation. He is given an amulet along with his great grandfather's diary, who describes an encounter with the evil witch Morgana. After pursuing her to Central Park, the diary suddenly ends, and the witch hunter's body is found in Central Park. He believes Morgana killed his great-grandfather. The immortal Morgana is still alive, and the great grandson intends to become a witch hunter too. When he confronts Morgana, she thinks he is the great grandfather, who has been resurrected, and they have sex. He escapes, and is joined by a good witch, and the two confront her again. Their combined powers are not enough to defeat Morgana, until the good witch throws a witch hunter dagger at Morgana. Morgana stops it in mid-air, and casts a spell on the special amulet. As spectral vapors arise from the amulet, Morgana allows the witch hunter dagger to continue its flight, and it kills her.

The back story is that the evil witch, Morgana, is pursued by a Witch Hunter in the 1930s. She falls in love with him, and realizes she must flee, or kill him. He tracks her to Central Park, and since they are in love, they declare a truce. The witch hunter is killed by gangsters, but she captures his spirit in the amulet, in hopes of reviving him with her witch powers. But the amulet is lost, and she cannot find the resurrection spell after decades of searching. Confronted today (see above), she recovers the amulet, and frees the spirit of the man she loves. After letting the dagger strike her, she dies, freeing her spirit to join his. The two spirits tell the whole story, enlivened with tales from the 1930s and their love of Shakespeare. The elder witch hunter discovers he has much to learn about modern times. But with Morgana's help the two set off to attend Halloween festivities in Salem.

I'm developing a really sick idea.

That is the end of the story where all but one are dead and have met at a cemetery. It's time to go and collect the last one alive, Jane, but they find she's hung herself and has a really nasty neck burn. Since injuries don't heal after death, they're discussing how to conceal it. Ghosts still have their vanity, don't they?

One suggests a scarf, another suggests a turtleneck sweater or other high neck tops.

Good Ole' Aunt Nancy chimes in snidely .... "Or a collar!"

I'm working on one now for the next Valentine's Day contest.
That'll be my first one with any scenes set in the afterlife, but one of my existing stories, For Twelve Month and a Day, sort of winks at it.

My alter ego character did the second book, and I did write a story about a thoroughbred racehorse that ended up on Charon's ferry in, "Cash or Card?"

Devil's Dance Floor Not really a happy afterlife story, but an afterlife story. It's about a demonic demi-god with a masochistic streak selecting his first recently departed soul to torture. He finds a certain appeal in an a sadistic and beautiful woman with a dark history. (There are mistakes in it. I apologize, I wrote it on my phone and didn't really edit it 'cause I had too much other shit going on and knew I would either submit it as is or never submit it, lol.)

And a very good story it is, too. Dark, moody, full of atmosphere.
