The small Philadephia clubs where he started out used a table as a stage for the commedians, but Bill was too tall to stand up on a table in the low ceilinged rooms. He would put a chair on the table and sit to tell his stories and started a new style of comedy in the process.
(This is from memory of a very old interview with Bill Cosby -- Circa 1968 or so.)
PS: Bill has a doctorate in education, although he was still a student when he started as a commedian.

I've had a chair-job for more than three years now and I have yet to finish college.
I did, however, start out at this chair job makin' beans.
Keep in mind, even chair jobs are difficult to hold on to these days.

sidenote: used to work in a lawfirm where we hired this guy who brought in his own chair from home... people thought he was kind of odd but I thought it was right on: who else is going to worry about your comfort if not you?
