Valentines Day is just a conspiracy to keep the greetings cards, confectionary, and floral arrangements industries afloat. :D

BTW, I don't think this thread goes in the Personals section.

I hear ya. I think its a day where you are forced to show love. And whats up with roses and chocolate?? People need to be more creative. I have someone here that sent me flowers on multiple occasions. At least he was smart and sent things other than roses.

What is that? Valentine? What? Huh? *I boycott it* :D

In reality, isn't Valentine's Day in honor of St. Valentine who beheaded people or something like that? I don't quite remember the exact tale, maybe someone could help......

How you doing knight? Hope all is well in your kingdom!

The commercialism of V'day has gotten out of control, just as Christmas, Easter and all the other holidays. The original reason for celebrating these days has been lost to the opportunity for profit. No one says you must subscribe to all of the hoopla, but perhaps in your own way, you could help to spread a little love and compassion today? It costs nothing and can impact another's life in ways expensive presents cannot. Besides, that stranger you might show compassion for may be undergoing a rough time in their life and your kindness might be the pivotal point for them. You never know!
Its not about candy and roses, its about giving to others a part of yourself which is free!
Regardless, I wish you a good V'day! :rose:

~kym~ not into the hoopla either :)

Even if the roses are predictable.....it is a lovely gesture :)

A little originality goes a long way though!

The roots of St. Valentine's Day lie in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on Feb. 15. For 800 years the Romans had dedicated this day to the god Lupercus. On Lupercalia, a young man would draw the name of a young woman in a lottery and would then keep the woman as a sexual companion for the year.

Pope Gelasius I was, understandably, less than thrilled with this custom. So he changed the lottery to have both young men and women draw the names of saints whom they would then emulate for the year (a change that no doubt disappointed a few young men). Instead of Lupercus, the patron of the feast became Valentine. For Roman men, the day continued to be an occasion to seek the affections of women, and it became a tradition to give out handwritten messages of admiration that included Valentine's name.

There was also a conventional belief in Europe during the Middle Ages that birds chose their partners in the middle of February. Thus the day was dedicated to love, and people observed it by writing love letters and sending small gifts to their beloved. Legend has it that Charles, duke of Orleans, sent the first real Valentine card to his wife in 1415, when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. (He, however, was not beheaded, and died a half-century later of old age.)
