Ok, so (and I'm not gonna name names) I realized that we have a general newbie who's been here long enough I should have noticed them, but hadn't. So then I started wondering why, and realized their user name annoys me for reasons I'm not sure of.

Then I wondered if, possibly, some of the people who never piss anyone off, but also never find a niche here have user names that possibly just don't catch our eye, or annoy us, or (when we're just scanning the posts) look like the user name of someone we ignore on principle (like it starts with the same first three letters or something), and so we tend to ignore them.

In other words, how important do you think a person's user name is to their ability to 'fit in', 'find a niche', or whatever it is you want to call it?

I voted for the last option, because frankly, I would really love some cookies and gum. And porn is great too.

But it is kind of important for me. I tend to ignore people who have, in my opinion, really ridiculous or stupid usernames. Nine times out of ten, they tend to act that way as well.

Not for fitting in, but I just have a terrible time remembering names and the story that goes with them. Like I thought Keroin was a guy. Not because of her posting style. Just because for some odd reason I thought guy name when I read Keroin. Actually, duh, the main reason is probably because I now have AVs turned off, but I didn't always. Since I'm more visual, it helped to be able to associate an image with a person. Now that kidlet uses the computer from time to time, it's just easier to have AVs turned off. Of course, I'm just about at the point where I need to be careful about words on the screen too.

I pay more attention to writing style/words than screen nicks. If I see a trend of solid writing, I'll notice the user name and make note to read their posts as I come across them; if I see a trend of painfully communicated thoughts, I'll make note to skim (or ignore) the posts.

Sightly OT - I'm not sure my user name even "fits" me anymore; goodness knows what sort of [ill conceived] perceptions are formed based on it.

Mine isn't a name I wouldn't have picked to post under. I came to submit stories with no intention of posting on the boards.

Hmmmm..I certainly hope user names and av's don't count for a whole lot.....

I'm a very literal guy.

If you call yourself "Nasty_Bitch," then that's what I'll assume you are - until my collective reading of your posts indicates otherwise. And since I only read a small portion of posts here, that could take quite a while.

I thought you were signaling an interest in age play or pet play or something.

People who have stupid, garbled, trite or codelike names end up having to earn respect they would have garnered just from better name choice.

My nickname expresses me, I would feel very funny if I was called Xywzx in any aspect of my virtual world.

What makes me snicker around Lit are wannabe Doms who assume entire sub community is going to prostrate under their feet if they only put MasterlyDomUltimateMister as username. But I had that convo in personals forum already :D

Your name always gets that song 'stray cat strut' stuck in my head.

Usernames don't bother me at all; but there are some AV's that do. Thankfully, with Firefox, I have the ability to only ignore the ones that really irk me like the genitalia AV's.

If someone is always posting in l33t speak, I won't even bother with them. Other than that, I try to take the time to read posts by anyone. Certian people in the AH area, I have on ignore because they've proven to be racist and bigots more than once.

I don't think I've been annoyed by any screennames. I prefer ones that are easy to read, and I like "clever" ones, but I doubt I've ignored a person because of screenname alone. As far as the ease with which some people find a niche and others don't, screenname might have something to do with it and it might not. Since I don't feel I've found a niche anywhere, it's hard for me to judge.

As an aside, I find discussing screennames is a great conversation starter. I love asking someone what their screenname means, and when someone finds out my name isn't Jennifer they ask why I have jennifer in my screenname and I explain how I wasn't feeling particularly creative when I joined lit...

It surprises me how often I think people's screennames "fit" them once I've read some of their posts and get a feel for them. The same thing happens when I get to know someone and learn their real name.

I voted "slightly important" (that in my interpretation is less important than the option "slightly unimportant").

The reason is that if a name is hard to sound out, I have a harder time remembering it. Names with Master or Sir or sub or slave or similar do not annoy me at all, but I do have a harder time at first taking seriously posts from people with names such as " cumslut" or "9in dick" or similar. I know it is a porn site so I make sure to read few posts before making an opinion.

A slightly different standard apply thou for posters of my pic thread.

And I have nobody on ignore.

I picked the last option, mostly because I like gum and also porn. The other options were not quite my opinion.

What I don't understand is how someone can post and everybody seems to know if the person is male or female, except me. I haven't recently, but in the past I would see what I considered a sexy post by someone and assume they were female. Well, I'd start flirting with them and eventually someone would send me a PM telling me that they are male.

Now, there is nothing wrong with flirting with a male, if that is your cup of tea. I'm a hetro male and straight besides that, as well as dominant. Have I used enough labels?

DVS has it's meaning behind it, but some people don't always catch it. I'm not one to go around telling people what it means, either. Some can figure it out by just saying DVS out loud. And then...some can't.

Gracie just sounds like a female as well as those nicks that had Bitch in them or Dom/Domme or maybe His/Hers somewhere in the name. Let me tell you, I appreciate all the help I can get so thanks to those who do that, when thinking of a nick.

AVs are confusing, too. There is at least one guy who has a female picture as his AV and for a while, I thought he was female. Now, he has "I'm male" in his signature line, so I now know. No, I didn't flirt with him, but with the AV he has, I very well could have.

I don't care for some people's AVs but I figure this is a freedom of speech friendly site, so who am I to complain. And so, as long as I can figure out if the person is male or female, I'm usually OK with the nick. Now, one small thing though...if the nick has some strange characters in it, it's difficult to type. But, there is where I utilize copy and paste.

I do wish people would have their profile filled out enough that I can always see if they are male or female, though. It could save me some embarrassment, down the road.

If i planned on posting more than once, I wouldnt have picked three words from a song playing on the radio. ^.^

There are an awful lot of Cats and Angels around

I had to say DVS out loud about 5 times before I got it. But at least I got it. :D

Let me introduce myself - I am a female :D
