I didn't know what to expect from college, to be perfectly honest.
Look at me! I had just moved from a small Kansas town, to this enormous student residence building built for a large university here in New York city; all with a few of my high school friends and my boyfriend. Our transition hasn't been the greatest - I mean, already on our first day, we got lost like twice. But after a lot of effort we found our way and I had just finished unboxing my things with the help of my assigned roommate, the sophomore Julia Richards. My friends were in their respective dorms and Jason (my boyfriend) was doing his own thing and said that he'd drop by sometime later.
Things were just a bit quiet; as I finished placing my blankets on my modest bed, Julia had to head out for a cigarette. I would have joined her, but well...I don't smoke. But then, the second she left, someone entered my dorm room and asked out loudly:
"Yo, Julia?"
Anxiety hit me like a truck! But I was so brave that I managed to turn around to say "Oh hi. Julia just left for a cigarette. She'll be back later though."
...
So, this stranger stuck around and we chatted for a bit.
His name was Rick Gold and he was a senior here at New York College. He was a friendly guy, even if his eyes started to wander (it didn't bother me much. I was kind of used to it by now). In fact, he turned out to be a great guy and what surprised me was the fact that he knew me. No, he wasn't a stalker, silly! He happened to come across my profile on YouTube and said that he was a fan! Eventually, we were going going over his favorite video of mine:
"Oh my gosh, I can't believe it!" I squealed ecstatically when this man, just a stranger a few minutes ago said that he recognized me from my videos. You couldn't even imagine how big of a deal this was for me, some random high school senior making YouTube videos, to have been recognized by someone outside of my own grade. "Why was this one your favorite? Is it because I went over how mind numbing high school assignments are?"
...
That's when Jason showed up and saw me sitting on my bed with Rick to my side. I mean, it must have surprised him, seeing me with another guy in my room! But I think it went well - Rick and Jason chatted for a bit before Julia came back.
"Sorry Beth! I gotta head out now but we'll see each other soon!" he said, but hurrying up and heading with Julia outside to the hallway. "Catch ya later."
That's when Jason said "I don't really like him."
