How does story ranking work?

I don't know if this is the place to post this, but I can't find a forum that just discusses issues about the site itself. My question is, can anyone explain the algorithm that ranks the stories? I see on some pages the hierarchy is rank-># of votes and on others it is just rank.

The reason I'm asking is I'm confused about why Incest/Taboo Hall of Fame -> Last 12 months is inconsistent. The first page contains stories from the PREVIOUS 12 months, in other words, all of them are between 12 and 24 months old. Then on page 2 begins the real last 12 months. And stories written in the last 12 months that have a rank of greater than 4.80 disappear from the 12 month list, only to reappear when they are older than 12 months.

I have honestly never looked at things like page rank. I've looked at my individual story rankings, but not at where it turns up on site. I probably should look into that.

It seems to work just fine. You get to the top via highest votes if your scores are equal total votes trumps. Incest is one of the hugest categories if not the biggest. Of course things there are a bit crazy.

If two have an equal score the one with the higher amount of votes wins, though sometimes being newer wins out. I'm not entirely sure how that part of the code functions but it seems to only happen if you limit your search somewhat.

The front page has lots of stuff older than 12 months. Hell the #2 story is older than that.

The front page seems to work okay. But, if you click on More Incest/Taboo Hall of Fame at the bottom, you will find the first 50 on page 1, ranging from 4.87 to 4.81. Clicking on page 2, one would assume that the 4.81 stories would continue, but that's not the case. it begins with 4.82 stories (the first 9 of which are all 2013 stories, curiously), then continues on to 4.81 and on down.

If you then click on Last 12 months you will find zero stories written in the last 12 months on the first page. They actually begin on the second page.

Just browsing around the category and paying attention to how stories are ordered on different pages reveals numerous inconsistencies. No searching here, just looking around the top lists.

Earth shattering news? Well, no. But, these seem to be glaring fundamental bugs within decade-old code.
