well ACTUALLY

the most believable reasoning is:
a few hundred years ago in norway, a family of 5 who were not wealthy at all lived. the parents could not afford presents for the 3 children at christmas so they were not celebrating christmas. in the same town, the vicar knew of this family's position and went to their house, walked past and threw three sweets up and they all three went down the family's chimney and each sweet went down a different stocking of three which were hanging on the fireplace to dry. this is why stockings are about. and santa doesn't really come down the chimney...
