I tried to send someone a google docs link by pasting the link into a direct message but it came out censored. The domain name got replaced by asterisks. I also tried using Ctrl-K to make an HTML link. It looked right as I was composing the message but was regular text after I sent the message. How do people do this?

Two ways. Most people send the link to the editor's email. If you insist on sending it through the messaging system, then the recipient will have to replace the asterisks with docs.g o ogle.com removing the spaces I have had to insert here to get it to show it.
There are certain web addresses that Lit doesn't like and always replaces them with asterisks.

There should be a "share" button at the top right corner of your story in the google docs. Click that. Then add the editor by putting in his or her Gmail address through the "add to people and groups" bar on the window that should show up.
