I've been asked by a friend to check out what you're supposed to do if you contribute more than $10,000 a year to polical groups or individuals. Are you supposed to report this to the state? What agency? Is there a form?

One of you bright people must know.

It goes on your tax form, other than that anything under 10 grand is not taxable so you don't have to report it.

No, this is something outside of the tax form. This is somethign his secretary did for him years ago, before computerized systems, and he hasn't done it in years, and he read that the states are now suing people for not reporting (specifically the article was about Indian Tribes not reporting gifts). He's worried, and he's pretty sure this doesn't have to do with his tax form -- it's something else.

Isn't that more about reporting gifts RECEIVED than given?

All I know is that I don' t have to do anything special with any donation under 10,000. Just report it as a deduction.

Now anything I GET over 10,000, like say a gift from a relative, that I have to report. And that's 10,000 a year per source either way.

Assuming California, the Secretary of States Office handles it.

Other states are probably the same. Dunno about the Feds.

I bet Bob Torrcelli knows how to report contributions.:)
