I've heard people pronounce it the same as Dom, but others add an AY sound to the end.

Which is it people?

I think someone asked this before but the search function seems not to be working.

I can't even find my "symbols of BDSM" post that was probably my favorite ever.

Very politely and respectfully!

giggling madly Serious answer now. I had always given it a French pronunciation; it seems most French speaking Canadians do. That is, rhyming with "Dom" or "Homme". Since I've been in the states, I've almost exclusively heard "dom-MAY". Spelling-wise, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. "Dom-MAY" should be spelled like Creme Brulee, with the acute accent over the first e. Which I would have put there if my computer would cooperate!

I know that probably helped very little, but that's how I do it.

I agree, it rhymes with "homme."

Minor hijack

I pronounce it the same as I pronounce dom. I read somewhere that only newbies and wannabes pronounce it dom-ay. I don't know if this is true, since I'm a newbie, and quite frankly I hate to make generalizations.

Hehe, I just couldn't resist it!

How'd you do that?
Quite simple, first I pressed the ´ key on my keyboard, followed by the e key. It's most likely the advantage of using a non english keyboard ;)

Ah, true enough. I used to be the aide for the spanish teacher (no, I don't speak spanish, but I'm a great typist), and her keyboard could do things like that, but I've never figured out how she did it.

start>all programs>accessories>system tools>character map

I would read it as in french, but what one thinks as french can differ greatly from region to region... :D

I once heard a french speaking englisch, that was funny! :D Would really like to hear an american (or an aussie :D) speak french... :D

Wait, I think there is a part at Buffy, where Gilles starts to speak french and this part was not syncronized. I rember it sounded really funny...

Hm, how would you pronounce "Marquis"? Marcis or Markeez or Markee?

I never thought there was any confusion on the pronunciation of my name until recently, so I'm glad you asked.

It is pronounced mar-kee, as in the Marquis DeSade.

That's easy...

è é ê

more difficult is to get these dots "ä" on an e or an i.

Like this:

ë ï, still easy with my keyboard ;) Which also have these three keys on it æÆ øØ åÅ

You know, I'm starting to get worried that you folks are questioning my sanity so.

On a standard keyboard, é is typed by holding down the Alt key and pressing 0233 (on the 10-key pad, not the number keys on the top row!); others have their own codes, e.g., þ (makes a cute little tongue for sticking out at someone - :þ ).

For the characters below in Arial (other fonts have some differences for some codes), hold down Alt and press the 4-digit code following the character:
ƒ 0131 „ 0132 … 0133 † 0134 ‡ 0135 ˆ 0136 ‰ 0137 Š 0138 ‹ 0139 Œ 0140 Ž 0142 • 0149 ™ 0153 š 0154 › 0155 œ 0156 ž 0158 Ÿ 0159 ¢ 0162 £ 0163 ¤ 0164 ¥ 0165 § 0167 ¨ 0168 © 0169 ª 0170

Bleah. I'm tired of this game. You can figure out others if you wish - just open a word-processing application and hold down the Alt key, then type in 4-digit numbers. Or you can follow RR's advice and go to Character Map. If Character Map isn't installed in your system, google "Character Map," and you can download and install it. It's easy. My mother did it, and she's 77. Well, she was only 74 when she did it.

Oh, yeah. I pronounce it to rhyme with "homme."

Thanks Sir W, but for whatever reason, I still get nothing with the alt keys and the numerical commands. My friendly local computer geek said he'll look into it for me, as it seems I've got some programming gone awry, but he hasn't had a chance with finals and all that icky end of semester stuff going on.

Never shall I spell résumé the lazy way again!

Thank you Sir Winston!

Domme is pronounced as Dom....only one Dom I know throughout the world pronounces Domme as Dommay...He is My Gorean friend...so I let Him get away with it!

Well, 'til he does, you can still follow Brer Rosco's steps: "start>all programs>accessories>system tools>character map" rather than memorizing the whole series. Of course, being the genius you are, that wouldn't be difficult for you ;) but what I ended up doing was memorizing a few (since I used them fairly frequently at one point), and going to Character Map for the ones I hadn't kept in the cluttered closet of my cerebrum. In fact, I shortened RR's path by one level and moved CM from the system tools folder into the accessories folder.

Domme, like pompom.

I might as well make use of my microphone and mixer here and demonstrate it.

I pronounce it pretty much the same as dom except I usually pronounce the final M sound in dom not so soft
It's very subtle, I doubt any but me could recognize it.

Pretty much the same here but I emphasise the vowel a bit more than dom.
