How do you cope?

The people that own this site do a sweep for one bombs occasionally so it's quite likely bad votes will disappear.

I would hope that they can, and do, distinguish between a story that's been 1-bombed and one that truly sucks. I mean, I've run across stories that really deserve low ratings. However, I have never been able to bring myself to give a story anything lower than a 2.

The advice that our mothers gave us, "If you can't say anything nice..." is good sometimes, but if I think a story is in dire need of editing, I'll say so and I'll say why.

One of the first things I was able to do once I had moved, was to see first-hand an episode of Ed, the Sock.

The reason I mention this here is because his motto is: "If you don't have anything good to say, say it often!"

It felt like I was home! :nana:

Ditto. That was one fine piece of writing.
My personal opinion is that any personal comment that does not relate to your capacity as a writer should be disregarded (even praise) if it comes from someone who doesn't know you.

Thanks you for your story.

Bruce,

You are so sweet. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and post such a nice review.

How is it up in Canada? It's warming up here in Florida now and the beaches are lovely. You should come visit.

Thank you Dr. Frued.

Do you think I should lay down on your sofa while you psychoanalyze me. I know I have these impure thoughts about..........lol.

Well you get my drift.

Thanks again darling for reading my story.

Jill :)

I write for a mass public arena of people who LOVE to send me mail. Lots and lots of mail. In the beginning I read it all. The good, the bad, the unintelligable (I like guns...guns good) and the business I am in attracks some really great people and some real whack-jobs (kinda like Lit). Because it can be very technical in nature, people love to point out any little error you might make.

Now I read very little of my mail.

Once upon a time in a land far away when I was just a little WOK I used to think it was the duty of every writer to respond to every letter or e-mail. Of course if I did that I would probably never have time to write again much less be able to crawl out my my closet and stop slitting my wrists long enough.

I just keep in my mind that people are much more compelled to write something bad than good.

Every once in a while my agent will come across a letter he thinks I must read and of course he peruses the ones that mention technical inaccuracy (as do the editors of publications so that they can make an editorial note in a subsequent issue if it is really a sped mistake). But for the most part I ignore the correspondence. Of course sometimes comments make it to the feedback pages of certain publications (those that have them) and the publisher will ask me to comment. I'm never very nice when I am forced to respond. Of course...that's assuming I am ever nice to begin with.

I consider on-line trolling akin to people who correct chat board posts for grammar, spelling and typos. If you have that much time on your hands you really should spend it trying to dress as your mother.

So far I have received about 20 emails
--Wow. What the heck did you write and how do I imitate it? I've NEVER gotten that much response to ANY story I've written on here.

there were the hateful public postings
--That is why God (aka Laurel and Manu) invented the "moderate public comments" option. I make use of that option myself. Don't worry. It's not a sin to delete hateful trollings.

Trolls are like the remoras that attach themselves to sharks. The exception is that the remoras benefit the shark by removing parasites...trolls evolve into a larger parasite.

They are writer wannabe's or dried out old english majors living their life through the smut stories of others.

Ignore them...they mean nothing.

Yes I can see you telling me all about these impure thoughts of yours :)

I am not sure I'll be able to keep a professional relationship if you go off telling me any of these amazingly hot stories of yours

Just checked my schedule, I can squeeze you in before a guy named Oedipus. You two might bond :)
