How do we teach people how to spell?

For goodness sakes, people, it's not THAT hard to spell properly! I just read through a few posts here, and the spelling was atrocious! Arrgh!

It's called a dictionary, folks!

And when in complete doubt, just cut your reply from the reply form, put it in Word, spellcheck it, and then replace it in your reply box, (all before you actually hit 'submit').

Oy.

As you can see in the original post, the complaint is about poor spelling in posts. I agree that a submitted story should be run through a spell checker. When it is in a post, it's not that big of a deal.

My spelling sucks ... that's why I use spell checker ;)
Takes time to copy and paste but I guess that's the price I got to pay for being immigrant. Plus I type to slow...

My posts are usually full of crappy spelling.
It's not that I can't spell, but that I have a crappy keyboard. My keys don't always press down all the way, leaving letters out, or even putting up 2 letters at the same time.

SOme mistakes are typos, but most are my keyboard.

Excuses, excuses!!!

lay off the spelling some of us are lurning disabled and maby our thachers cared mour adout our nowing how to read then spell i am dislexic and in the jansville wi school sistem reading was wat th ld class worked on they hearly ever worked on spelling i cant do maih eather but that is the school systems falt not mine

Well, this isn't going to make me popular, but:

If everyone who spells poorly in a post at Literotica is learning disabled, then we have an amazingly disproportionate representation of them here. Most people who do it, as far as I can tell, are just being lazy. Saying that immigrant status, or learning disabilities, or even faulty schools, are insurmountable barriers to correct spelling and understandable grammar doesn't fly, either. My grandmother came over from the Old Country speaking nothing but Yiddish and not knowing how to read. She figured it out. My little brother is learning disabled, and even though it costs him a lot of effort at times, he manages to be quite understandable in print. There is also nothing that says that a faulty education can't be later repaired. Now, as much as I love them, my grandmother and little brother are not exceptional people. If they can do it, so can other people.

Please understand that I am not asking for immediate reeducation of those deficient, or for a spontaneous healing of learning disabilities. And I certainly don't expect that schools are going to retaior their curriculi in response to this post. I do ask that people be honest.

If you aren't spelling or expressing yourself well because you're learning disabled in a way that makes it practically impossible, then please include a tag at the end of your message to correct the impression that you're being lazy. If you're an immigrant, much the same would be helpful. Most of us are very forgiving, but I don't think it's unreasonable to get fed up with posts that stretch our minds not because they're intellectually (or otherwise) stimulating, but because they're so difficult to read.

Thanks :)

I think you're missing some of the sarcasm and bad humor in the responses to this thread.

The post just above yours, by rfshadow, is too poorly written not to be deliberate. Especially the comment, "i cant do maih eather but that is the school systems falt not mine" is a clue to (probable) sarcasm.

I took HarleydevilzoN's immigrant comment as being a (deliberate?) misspelling of "ignorant" -- which simply illustrates the importance of spelling and grammar in communicating inthis venue. There is a big difference being "Ignorant" and being "Immigrant."

Secondly, learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, are far more common than you might think, and not all of them are diagnosed or diagnosed properly.

The bottom line is that some people just don't care how illiterate they appear by ignoring elementary spelling and grammar and not proofreading their posts before submitting to make sure they haven't any words out ;)

I don't proofread most posts as carefully as I do story or essay submissions, just as I don't always use "proper English" when speaking. I do check to make sure that my posts say at least approximately what I intended them to say and are comprehensible.

Maybe some are like me who had to leave school to get a job. I left school at 13 because of trouble at home getting on with my dad who ruled the house with cast iron rules.

I have had to teach myself and if I have to write a hand written letter it's all printing with no commers as that part never got learnt. It still frustrates me when replying to some of the more serious threads because I know thewords I want to use but even going to the dictonary don't help because you need to know how to spell the word your trying to look up to see how to spell it.

I enjoy reading DON K DYKE's post because he has such a great way with the written words.

SO DON'T JUDGE THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN AS EDUCATED AS YOU.

Your right! Calling somebody lazy because they have trouble spelling doesn't make sense to me. But I guess your perfect at everything that you do.

Now really, you just had an extremely profound thought. Spellchecker is a novel idea!

Congratulations are in order!

Oh now wait. I just scrolled up, and many of you are making excuses for your lack of intelligence. I understand most of you just get on literotica to give the ole one eyed snake a few tugs and get your rocks off, but still, that is nothing a good program can't fix! It's called m-i-c-r-o-s-o-f-t w-o-r-d. It has not only a spell checker, but it checks your grammar too! Laziness isn't an excuse either. Sloth is one of the Seven deadly sins.

Well, I'm definitely not perfect at everything I do. Right now, I'm rather inexpertly trying to seduce a friend of a friend into bed with my boyfriend and I. That aside, self-education is not impossible. Saying that it's not your highest priority is fine, but anyone who makes it a low priority when they have a deficiency in a common area should be aware that they will be judged for it. I won't apologize for thinking that someone is less likely to express themselves well when I haven't seen them do it well before.

That having been said, someone noted that most come here to masturbate and exchange (sometimes) witty banter. That's fine. Just from my own perspective, I get a hell of a lot better orgasms from well-written stuff, and I find people more witty when I can understand their reparte. Try to think of this in relation to the audio files here on Literotica. Some of them are really clear and easy to get into, but the heavier the breathing interference and the more slurred the words are, the harder they are to get into. We're all just trying to communicate.

Are you going to provide everyone here a copy of Microsoft Word?

And shouldn't Microsoft Word be capitalized?

Isn't Pride one of the sins also?

Microsoft Word's spelling and grammar checkers are useful in a limited way, but the applications' ignorance and inflexibility can sometimes be amazing. I find it more useful for typos than actual spell- and grammar checking. People who are uncertain of their abilities in this regard would do better to allow themselves to be guided by an editor. I really ought to enlist in the Volunteer Editor program myself, but it's too much like what I do at work. One wants a break, y'know?

Spell Checker

I'm not going to read ever page of this thread so I hope this hasn't already been put up.

There is a great little program called ieSpell that you can download, for the MIE Browser. The program sits on your tool-bar and works just like spell check in and word processing program and you don't have to do that copy-paste-spell check-copy-paste just to get your spelling checked. Try it out.

www.iespell.com will find the program.

And best of all it's free.

Yep, that's a good little program. I suggested it a few pages back. The only thing that I don't like about it is that you can't use it in email. It only works with the web browser.

Well, I've downloaded it now and I'm using it for the first time in this massage to you. If this program works as you say, I'll be one happy camper, indeed.

Well, here's the check.........OK....did its job. It caught the misspelled words I left for it..............only problem is it wants to spell check "vBcode" and "Literotica" and even "iespell" to....IOW, anything on the screen whether it's in the reply box or not is spellchecked.......so you must click "ignore" a few extra times......no big deal........much quicker that the Spelling Ace gizzmo I have been using (I'm on my second one).

I'm smiling. See? :) Thanks for the info, you're a pal.

{I do, however, think I'll make a donation}

Re: Re: Spell Checker

I've tested ispell as well, and also think it works great. And I have a little tip for the use of it. You can select the text you want checked, simply by "marking" section you want spellchecked. Just mark the text as any other piece of text you want to copy from a webpage, and then run the ispell.

I thank you, to.

I post a lot on several opinion forums regularly.....so it's going to be a great aid....and your suggestion sped things up even more. {Hmmmmm. now what'll I do with all this newfound time?}:D
