How do top lists work?

You have to have a minimum of 10 votes before you appear on a top list.
Many of us have had at least one story that reached 10 votes with a perfect 5.00. That is when the rating becomes visible to other people. The 5.00 rating doesn't last long after that.
A story that has a large number of votes, say over 100, and is rated 4.85 or higher, is really popular and is likely to be well written.
A story with less than 20 votes is very vulnerable to being 'trolled' by someone voting a 1. That will bring the rating tumbling down.

Hell, a troll can affect even a high ranked story.
One of mine was number four on a list last week. Got trolled, once, and it's down to thirty eight.
Don't care. Got lots of positive feedback. I'm finding that counts for more.

And as EL, rgraham, Og, TxRad and others will probably agree, sometimes there seems to be an inverse ration between positive feedback and your score. My Nude Day contest entry was a Romance that had many feedback "bouquets" tossed its way. But in the voting there were a whole lot of brickbats. It's my lowest scoring story.English Lady said:
