Are you sure that works with salt water? I've only heard of that technique being used for fetid water.

That's what I've read. I have never put it into practice though. Could be one of those things that you're told to do but don't really work like peeing on a jellyfish sting.
 
Yes, liquid is absorbed very quickly and efficiently. If you're at sea with no water you can give yourself a sea water enema to avoid dehydration because the water is absorbed but the salt is not. True story.

So you're saying a basic survival kit should include a flint, fish hook and some line, signaling mirror, and one of those rubber bulb thingys.
