How can you tell if people are enjoying what you have written?

I was just curious as to whether or not there was a way of finding out:

A) If anyone is even READING what you have written,

and

B) If so, how they are voting on it (eg: this sucks, or I like it).

Thanks in advance!

I loved this post.
This was a great post.
It really turned me on.
I give it an 8. No, make that a 9. Yes, a 9.
I highly anticipate the author's next post.

Hi Violet,

I sure know the feeling you are talking about *s* but the only "advise" I can give is that as long as nobody mails you saying your story is plain crap it is good *s* .. and hey - I think you did get some terrific feedback on your story even here on the BB, and that is more than most of us are getting ...

So relax and just keep waiting for the new scripts - those should answer your "questions" in regards to voting (and maybe even hits) on your stories.

PS: I enjoyed reading your storie - the one I found anyway so far.

Thank you Hectate and RNite for your responses.

I was not aware that that was going to be one of the benefits that I could reap from the new script. Huzzah am I excited now!

Yes I did get about three responses regarding my story on the story feedback board (including the thread starter) and those were appreciated. I was wanted to know whether or not you were the only three that read it! lol

I submitted ch. 2 a while back but b/c chapter one took over three months to get posted, it will likely be awhile. However, thanks for the patience and I certanily hope you read it when it does arrive!

Fare Thee Well Friends!

good question!

I always wonder where the "vote" at the end of the story is tallied. Who gets those things? How do you know what people think? (besides lack of negative feedback)

Well, Readers, join the queue. I wondered how the votes are tallied also. I have had several come up #1, and I asked Laurel how the votes were counted.

She said they count how high the score is that the reader gives, and that puts them up on top.

I am still wondering how many people voted! There are a BUNCH of people who read the stories and vote. But how many make a story #1, or puts it on the Top 20 list?

Inquiring mind want to know!

I don't really know for sure, but given that most viewers don't vote the top vote scorers may be very old vote results or just what the people who do vote like or even what people like enough to vote for. Sorry this is what freedom gives you.

Violet,
If I like what I read, I will usually send an email and tell you.

Before I had a story on the Top 20 List, I thought the list remained stagnant. But I keep pretty close tabs on it now (at least where my story is concerned!) The stories do jumble about for position a little. Mine has fallen to 11 and been has high as 5.

I think that there isn't much voting going on, except for the extremes. Like if it's really bad or really great. I don't know. When the new script is up and we can see the tallies, we'll all have a better idea. :)

How do you know if your story was read?

I have three approaches to a story I read (and I read the new stories at least once per day):
1. If I don't like it at all, I won't vote. I don't see any reason in putting an author down; I let my silence speak.
2. If I like it, I'll vote.
3. If I really like it (and I usually check my pants for the wet spot :), I'll vote and drop the author a note.

My dry cleaning bills lately have been high :::chuckle:::

Ya know Ed, I think that is the best approach. (I do that also.) For those of us that write stories, it is great to get even that one line note. If you don't enjoy a story because it does nothing for you from an erotic point of view or even if you think it is pooly written then just giving it a pass is comment enough.

I don't know if this influenced my readers or not, but I put a little blurb at the end of my story:

I hope you enjoyed reading "Hostile Takeover" as much as I enjoyed writing it...Thank you for sticking with it all the way to the end. I appreciate any and all comments, even, maybe even especially, the critical ones. <smiles>

Thankfully many people took me at my word and have written me. Maybe if you put something similar at the end of your story too, people will write and tell you what they thought. :)

I use the same voting/response formula that most seem to use, but I sometimes poke my nose in and send "helpful?" feedback, and usually get grateful responses.

I really appreciate getting even the shortest notes about my stories and I always respond to e-mails. I write because I love to, but knowing readers are out there reading also makes a difference. Thank you, readers! And thank you, Laurel. We all know this is a lot of work.

Yeah I can hardly wait for the new script.

I have been submitting all my stories via the new script so I'll have tallies when they get posted.

That tracks with my experience as well. I have had a couple of posts and one or two e-mails from each story I have submitted.

I've received about two emails per story, plus a few of the stories have received board notice.

I think if people really like what they read so much that it effects them, they will email the author. My thoughts anyways. I like to think that at least. I myself, have had many responses through email much to my delight, and I never tire of hearing from my readers.

I am very excited because this past year I spent time revising the three current stories I have in Literotica as well as finish Summer's Day. ( My new one) They are 100% better than the first versions I wrote long ago. I didn't know what the hell I was doing then, I know so much more now. I do hope to hear some feedback once my newest versions are up. Hopefully, that won't take too long, now that the new scripts are to be in place.

One thing I have to say though, rewrites are damn hard. It was the biggest challenge I have ever taken upon myself. I feel proud though, because I have exceeded in my goals and learned so much more in doing so.

I wonder if there would be any way to encourage readers to vote. There is a music site called Garageband.com ( http://www.garageband.com ) - where listeners vote on songs posted there. The bands are competing for a recording contract... The listeners get credit for each time they listen and vote - after reviewing 20 pairs of tracks they get a $25 gift certificate to an online CD store. I'm not suggesting that Literotica could afford that. But perhaps there is some kind of incentive that could be given? Like maybe the hightest ranked author in any given month would write a story featuring the reader who cast the most votes?

This isn't a mature idea yet... how this could work... but I throw it out for comments.

I would be concerned that readers would start voting for the incentives, rather than expressing their feelings. I don't know if more votes would give a better indication of the "true" ranking of the story or not.

Violet, as a new boy on here, at least as far as submitting stories go I was wondering the same as you, but with two stories now posted I've received quite a few emails, and if you go to the Stories & Pics index and then go to Top Lists (I think it's called) you can see loads of stories in each category (or all stories ranked together) in an order which seems to be arrived at by taking the average score given. There is also a column telling you how many people have read your story, which is quite flattering (or not, as the case may be). The results I've seen have certainly been encouraging, and I can feel the inspiration flowing (at least, I think it's inspiration) through me again.
Happy days, Milkyway
