I just heard last night that the UN chair for human rights is Libya. Isn't that an oxymoron?

Try and keep up with the news. That happened three weeks ago.
Yes, it's odd. Countries like the US and Libya shouldn't be allowed on the committee.

the point of the UN is that its for every country in the world ... not just the countries we like :)

Oh this much I know but isn't it kinda like putting the wolf in charge guarding of the henhouse? Couldn't a country have been chosen that understands what human rights is? Like Lichtenstein?

i doubt it means very much .... it won't mean that libya can suddenly change the laws on human rights

and anyway who would you propose ?

uk and usa haven't got a very good human rights record either ... both countries are still breaching human rights as of now

I wasn't thinking USA or UK. If I had to choose, maybe Sweden or Switzerland. But not Libya. I know it means diddly squat in the big scheme of things but I just don't see how Libya can chair that commitee.

i don't know enough about it to give a full opinion but maybe they are given the chair in hopes it will make them look at human rights in their own country
