How About That John Ashcroft?

Hey, the French knew we were lying.

There are some things you do for political posturing for the folks back home. I, for one, believe the French are smart enough to see what a danger this group, and people like them pose to both thier and our way of life.

Some things just have to be done tactically.

The problem AJ is that this action and others are helping to ensure that next time the French say "tough shit he's here and we're sending him to a country club for a week" idiotic actions like this will hurt the United States ability to extradite a prisoner from any country in the world.

I've said it before and I'll be saying it for the rest of my life..

The US Government is in no way to be trusted at all. Ashcroft especially, he quite literally puts a fleece over justice.

Seeing the success rate of the terrorists, there is hardly a way this man could've been the 20th hijacker. He would've been in the attack. He may have Al Qaeda ties, but 20th hijacker? Unlikely. We just want to claim that we 'got' somebody for the terrorist act, esp. since we're not going to find Osama.

This administration is fucking ignorant about the progress that has been made in international law as well as the international political system since the end of the Cold War. It's a fucking shame that a racist (and yes, Ashcroft is just that, look at his history in Missouri) a misogynist (I love the way he thinks about women) and just generally an intolerant fascist prick can have such a terrible impact on our society.

I like Feingold, but now I'm even more pissed that he didn't vote against Ashcroft. He has made our country an unreliable ally and a laughing stock in the international community.
So should the government have executed Tim McVeigh? As I remember most everybody wanted him dead. No midnight vigal for Timmy. Explain how Ashcroft is any worse than Reno, As I recall didnt she take responsibility for burning men, women and children to death in Texas. Whats interesting to me is Reno/Clinton showed the world just what the American govt is capable of doing to its own people.

No, I don't think that the Gov. should have granted McVeigh the
Martyrdom he sought.

In my lifetime the Attorney General's position has been more about patronage than justice, from Kennedy appointing his brother, Nixon appointing his campaign chairman, Reagan appointing his personal attorney, etc.

I had no shortage of criticism for Reno's savage use of force against americans that wanted to be let alone. I agree it resulted in the Oklahoma City bombing. I hope that's a closed chapter in our history.

While Ashcroft may not be depriving many of us of life, he is trying to abridge other rights & freedoms, & those of us who spend too much time on the internet will notice if he has his way.

I don't like the way the administration claims to be at war, or not, depending on which rules best serve their short term intentions.

My outrage with this incident was that I believe it is the Attorney General interfering with our international relations. I believe he has made us untrustworthy, which will result in reduced cooperation.I think that if Al Quaida is as global as we're told it is, it will take more international police actions than military operations to remove it. I think that if we don't finish Al Quida , they'll strike us again & again , and that will/could have a direct affect on my personal peace & prosperity.

Of course this remains to be seen, but Oklahoma City didn't immediately follow Wacco.

The long term affects of the laws passed after 9/11 are what concern me,these laws will be on the books long after Bush and his boys are gone:( Im also concerned about this Homeland Security stuff as it seems to me that this job is the responsibility of the FBI, I dont understand the need for a new bureaucracy:confused: I do agree with you that its only a matter of time when Al Quaida strikes again.

The way I read the Bill of Rights, it's basically binary: We have a declared war or we are at peace. I really think if we can't name an enemy we shouldn't be at war. A war against terrorism? Isn't that like the War on Poverty or the War on Drugs? If we don't like the constitutional constraints, it can be amended if enough people are convinced.

As things stand, we don't know what's going on or when it will end.

Homeland Security was instituted to coordinate agencies & demagogues in government prone to petty turf battles and ass covering. It should never have been nescessary, but it might never succede.
