What Karl Rove did was evil genius caliber. But he understood what and why he was doing what he did. He promised to give a certain group of people (conservative Christians) something very specific (repeal abortion) to gain their vote. He also knew he couldn't do it. He couldn't have cared much less for abortion or for conservative Christians.

You can't just feed every group of people the same stuff. Rove knew that. It's a strategy that works quietly and for a short time, but if you find that weak spot in the armor and you strike fast, it works. It works when you are a realist exploiting idealism. It does not work when you're an idealist trying to exploit reality.

You can't just bang on any bit of any armor and insist that this spot, this hammer will and must work. Obviously it doesn't.

Well, they did get the Democrats/Obama to agree to what is essentially a Republican budget. But they were willing to give that away anyway.

I think accepting the Ryan budget as the "norm" -- this very far-right plan will be a Democratic starting point in future negotiations and demands for more "compromises" that always lead us rightward--is going to bite down the road. I don't know that Obama had a lot of choice considering the Democrats don't control all the branches of government, but he's the one who is going to take the heat in the end.
