Hottest Women of All Time

Nearly all the selections made in this thread have been visually based .To me appearance alone is like an empty canvas; movement, a smile, the sound of her voice, even her smell: whatever it takes to elicit a response.

Well, yes. Lauren Bacall was a good looker. But then when she spoke, she was really hot. (I think)

The Top Ten looks like this:

1. JA -- cute at best, sick of her whining about dickhead Brad though.
2. Raquel Welch -- back in the day fuckin' hot!
3. Marilyn Monroe -- bubble gum, no thx
4. Britney Spears -- are you fuckin' kidding me?
5. Madonna -- um, no.
6. Ursula Andress -- yes!
7. Bettie Page -- yes!
8. Pamela Anderson -- early yes, later no.
9. Jane Fonda -- no.
10. Angelina Jolie -- I think of this one to get rid of a hard-on. Simply disgusting.

I used to subscribe to Men's Health, but I finally figured out they have too much BS in their stuff, especially in how to treat women and food.

I think you do MM a dis-service. Just because she was portrayed like it. . . .

Britney Spears > who ?

Pamela Anderson > bit of a pretty slapper.

Madonna > just stick to the music, Lady.

Beauty vs. hotness seems straightforward enough to me, but I wondered how you’d separate hotness and sexiness. I think you have managed, though; in place of Tyra Banks, I can think, say, Keanu Reeves. Not the freshest example, but fits your scheme, I think. Beautiful and desirable, until—well, not even until he speaks. The vacant facial expression is enough to undo the illusion.

I’m partially surprised with what you say about Hitchcockian blondes, though, and I don’t mean to start an analysis of sexuality in his movies. I just mean, don’t we tend to read hotness into cool surfaces? Or maybe it’s something that women do, or I do.

The icy beauty is a classic sexual archetype, but Hitchcock's blondes were more wholesome than sexual, and he seemed to have a very personal obsession with the type.

From a review of one of his bio's:

As a casual viewer of Nick-at-Nite reruns of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, I knew him only as the cartoonishly portly British man with the protruding lower lip and signature silhouette. But according to a new Hitchcock bio, was anything but a cuddly cartoon: the director famously mistreated the always-blonde heroines of his classic films. The biography by Donald Spoto, called Spellbound by Beauty: Alfred Hitchcock and His Leading Ladies, paints a truly ugly picture of the heralded Hollywood heavyweight. "He pecked away at [the actresses'] insecurities, whispered filthy remarks right before they faced the camera and forced them to do countless takes of physically demanding scenes," USA Today reports. But it gets worse.

Hitchcock derived a great deal of pleasure through humiliating his heroines, or, in his own words, "Nothing pleases me more than to knock the ladylikeness out of them." Tippi Hedren, the star of The Birds and the mother of Melanie Griffith, fared the worst of all Hitchcock's leading women. "The aging auteur tutored her, dressed her and even had her handwriting analyzed," according to USA Today. "But nothing topped a week spent being attacked by live versions of her winged co-stars during filming of The Birds, which sent her into clinical shock — except for when he demanded that Hedren be at his sexual beck and call during Marnie, which she refused."

Spellbound by Beauty offers some insight into Hitchcock's personal life, which could explain the cruelty he inflicted on his female stars. Apparently, he only had sex once. Hitchcock married Alma Reveille in 1926 and allegedly, their single sexual encounter produced their daughter, Patricia. The sexual frustration, argues the author of Spellbound, "resulted in Hitchcock's compensating need to harass many of his lovely leading ladies."

It's undeniable that Hitchcock produced some of the greatest cinema of the 20th century, and for me at least, this knowledge will probably not change my view of his films. As we've pondered before in terms of novelists, is it possible to separate a person's private behavior from their artistic output?

From a review of one of his bio's:

The word I’d use wouldn’t be wholesome, I think, but fetishistic. But you’re right, of course; there’s the usual debate as to whether his films are hateful to women’s sexuality or exposing the existing hatred, and then there’s his bio. I think I wasn’t aiming so deep, though—just had that association about outward coolness that invites the imagination.

I was struck by the thought that I'd not seen too many references to TV heroines.
I'd therefore nominate Cote de Pablo (de Santiago) [from NCIS]

I would add Connie Nielsen, Natalie Portman (I had them together in a Celeb sex story, for those who don't know), Vivien Leigh (if she isn't already there), Donna Reed (who hasn't seen It's A Wonderful Life, at least), Mary Tyler Moore, Mary, Queen of Scots (she failed as a Queen, but she was certainly one of the great beauties of her day), Livia (wife of Augustus, noted for her beauty....and ruthlessness), Dolly Madison (brave, too, rescuing so much from the White House during the British raid on DC), and Mary Pickford (famous silent movie starlet in her day, teamed with Douglas Fairbanks).

Just some examples. Not sure about Honoria Augusta, sister of the Emperor Valentinian III, but she couldn't have been that bad-looking if Attila the Hun wanted to marry her so much....though her "dowry" was the decisive factor (half of the Western Empire).

Obviously, a number of Henry VIII's queens were lovely. Maybe not their characters, but their actual looks. His third wife was reportedly both nice and pretty. Tragic, too, dying in childbirth. Of course, all but one of his wives were tragic. Even Anne of Cleves, who also survived him by accepting the annulment. (I still wonder if she was actually as ugly as he claimed. One hears that her ignorance of courtly, knight-lady manners were a factor, since oddly enough, Henry saw himself in the chivalric role constantly.)

Oh, and one might add a certain Jewess from Poland, I forget her name, who inspired Casimir the Great to respect the rights of Jews in his land. Which brings to mind Esther from the biblical narrative and Purim fame. Granted, she was a bit bloodthirsty toward the end, but that Haman guy really had her terrified and presumably paranoid.

Honorable mention to Maria Theresa, the Hapsburg ruler who was known for her beauty, excellent officials and advisers (though perhaps not excellent generals, since she lost Silesia to Frederick the Great), devotion to her family and faith (including a figurehead husband who couldn't have been named Holy Roman Emperor without her influence and who actually exchanged duchies with an Italian prince!), and her particularly famous son, the great (if overzealous) reformer Joseph II......and of course, her daughter, Marie Antoinette, of France, revolution, and Madame Guillotine notoriety.

I personally didn't care for JA on Friends, or most of her other movies, besides "Horrible Bosses." nevertheless, she is a lovely woman. Great skin.

I liked her better before the surgery and the obsession with Brad and Angie. After that, it got old.

Jennifer Grey lost a bit with her surgery, too. I just really hate it when ethnic types get rid of their genetic links to their proud heritage. It kills something for me. I think it's respect. I lose respect for them.

Speaking of respect.....she isn't mainstream famous, just Lit famous, but Colly was always a great beauty in my opinion.

I'd have to say my top Two at the moment off the top of my head, would be Selma Hayek and Salma Blair, Katey Sagel would make the list, as would Laura Prepon, if I didn't have better things to do than make lists - if I did there would probably be more musicians than actresses on it though, start with Wendy O' Williams, tragedy is sexy somehow.

Anniston has a shapely ass and good legs, but I couldn't say exactly she radiates sex appeal, more like the girl next door, you could go out with her out for a beer, which is probably why she tops the list for people who read RS, I mean are we talking sexy or just cute?

OK, here are my suggestions for a list:

Beauties

I've been smitten by a pair of beauties who'se name I haven't seen at all and a mother/daughter pair at that.

Jane Mansfield and Mariska Hargitay

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaariska! Forgot about her, half the reason I watch SVU. Kathryn Erbe is pretty hot too.

All good picks, lot's of good looking women, but I think if we're talking the current incarnation of the sex goddess, Shakira has got it goin' on.

But I find Alex Borstein incredibly sexy for some reason, a woman with a sense of humor is hard to resist.

Let me add a belated third to that! The lady could act and even sing. Try Youtube for 'River of No Return.'
