Compare a full size car from the 1960s or 1970s- that Lincoln above, for example, with a full size car of the 2000's. What is full size for a car today would have been mid-sized back then. In fact, part of the reason trucks and SUV's have gotten so big is that people want large vehicles, but they don't make cars that big anymore so the only choice to haul the family and kids on a road trip is your basic Suburban, Escalade, Ford Expedition, or Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Though I believe you European people still prefer to drive small Fiat Mouse-sized cars, which to be fair, work better on those older, smaller/narrower roads.
