I recently discovered that Texas law forbids the possession, sale, or transfer of horsemeat for human consumption within the state. There are two horsemeat plants in Texas that exclusively export their products overseas, and a friend of mine is working with a group that is trying to get the Attorney General to shut them down.

Though I applaud my friend's enthusiasm for her cause, I fail to see why the behavior is illegal to begin with.

Has anyone here eaten horsemeat? If you haven't, would you? If you wouldn't, why not? And as a corrollary, do you support or oppose this law?

Aren't horse bones used for glue and gelatin? What's the deal?
No clue. That little blurb exhausts my knowledge of the subject. But you make a good point - it would seem that if we already use one part of the animal, then it would be efficient to encourage the use of other parts.

horses aren't bred for the glue factory....when they get very old and die, then you ship them away...

I rarely eat meat but yes i've had horse.

your aloud to sell horse as food so long as they were raised as cattle, you cannot eat one that was raised in a barn as a pet or stuff like that.

no diff between horse and cow for me, I don't like meat

I have eaten horse meat, I have eaten bovine meat, I have eaten reptoid meat, I have eaten aquatic meat, I have eaten varmint meat, I have eaten feline meat, I have eaten canine meat, I have eaten insectoid meat, I have eaten fowl meat.

meat is meat is meat

regardless the animal it was produced from.

the north american standard says only cow, pork, fish and fowl is acceptable.

the hindu{correct me if i name the wrong sect} views no cow meat

the jews view no pork eating going on.

there is a region where no fowl is eaten.

again i say meat is meat is meat

there will always be someone who finds something objectionable.

if we keep up this political correctness crap the world is going to self implode itself cause there won't be a thing anyone can do that doesn't offend someone else so they won't be allowed to do it.

if i am with someone who don't eat pork, i don't flaunt it, i use reason and don't eat pork around them, same goes with pork, fish, horse, cow, anything.

we need common sense not political correctness.

but alas the days of common sense and personal responsibility are gone the way of the dodo bird and are extinct

All hiel Political Correctness

Um, Todd, the ban on horse meat in Texas has been around for much longer than the "politically correct" movement. I'm betting it has something to do with the reverence ranchers place on their horses, and maybe lobbying efforts on the part of the cattle industry to reduce competition.

I'd eat horse meat.
I've eaten venison and beef and lamb and chicken and kangaroo.
Why should horse meat be any different?

Just dont ask me to actually BUTCHER the meat.

i gotta draw the line somewhere.

FWIW

They used to sell horsemeat pre-packaged and frozen in the grocery stores in Michigan when I lived there.

An Irish priest and a Rabbi found themselves sharing a compartment on a train. After a while, the priest opened a conversation by saying "I know that, in your religion, you're not supposed to eat pork...Have you actually ever tasted it? The Rabbi said, "I must tell the truth. Yes, I have, on the odd occasion." Then the Rabbi had his turn of interrogation. He asked, "Your religion, too...I know you're supposed to be celibate. But...." The priest replied, "Yes, I know what you're going to ask. I have succumbed once or twice." There was silence for a while. Then the Rabbi peeped around the newspaper he was reading and said, "Better than pork, isn't it?"

the french eat horses
the vietnamese eat dogs
the chinese eat anything with legs apart from the table
horse meat is used in pet food , do the people of texas have pets?
maybe they got enough land in texas for huge horse cemetaries , never heard of a horse cremation , would that be like a bbq? just a thought

I actualy prefer rat meat open fire roasted

I faintly remember a phase back in the 70's when horsemeat was popular as an alternative to beef. I don't remember why, but I think it had to do with price. I don't think my mom ever served us horsemeat, but who knows? I haven't eaten it voluntarily.

That was so considerate of her to wear her best fuck-me pumps. I'm sure Mr. Ed appreciated the gesture.

I was almost afraid to open that pic,PC.

I used to work on a horse stud farm.
My job, apart from cleaning crap out of stables and all the mundane chores of a stud, was to hold the mare while the stallion covered her.
It's SO fucking savage,a turn on to watch, believe it or not.
But not ONCE,ever, could i have imagined fucking it.
This stallion was fucking huge, not just in penile length, but his overall standing was massive.
He had a chest on him like a barrel,no shit.
Anyways,the point of my story?
I dont really have one.*l*
But i'll ALWAYS remember the rush of a groan that came from each and every mare he covered, the way her eyes rolled back in her head as he bit savagely on her neck.

That chick wouldn't be smiling for long,no shit.*l*

damn you PC

I knew I'd be sorry if I clicked that link. I'm going to go puke now.

I've never eaten horse that I know of. I wouldn't be bothered if it was served to me.

I don't know why several states have laws against human consumption of horses. I do know that Oregon has had a law similar to Texas's for fifty-plus years. Oregon's law dates from the Great Depression, I think.

I'm opposed to most laws that dictate what is or is not suitable for human consumption. As long as a food is what it is claimed to be, (i.e. not horse meat sold as Beef) then who ever wants to eat it is welcome to.

Why some people would want to eat some things that are legal, I have know idea -- Who actually believes that Brussels Sprouts are really edible, anyway? :p

i agree with todd (gasp!)

meat is meat is meat...i don't eat much meat, and have never eaten horse meat, but the choice of foodstuff is cultural...if people want to eat horses and can get their meat in a clean (i.e. disease-free), humane fashion, then i suppose they have a right to pull out their steak knives and go at it

eating brussel sprouts, on the other hand, should definitely be criminalized

The law was probably used to deter horse theft... at least, that's my guess.

I don't have a problem with eating horse... I never have, but I would.

One thing though that I can imagine would keep me from eating meat from a horse that was raised as a 'pet' is that they're wormed frequently... and get lots of vaccines that a horse raised for meat wouldn't. There are warnings on almost everything I give my that they're not to be used on animals intended for consumption.

I think it was the loser at Epsom Downs

I've had horsemeat. It was in a restaurant in Brussels or Antwerp, I believe. Tastes exactly like beef. I was told that there are regulations against selling beef and horsemeat in the same store because it's hard to tell them apart. I don't know if that's true or not because horsemeat, while tasting the same, is darker in colour than beef.
