Roll on Christmas 2005

I'm looking forward to Christmas 2005.

My old house is near a shelter for homeless families. There is a lot of misery there around Christmas time as the reality is so different from what they would like it to be. Add cheap alcohol and the results are rows and bust-ups.

For years I and several of my neighbours have stayed sober at Christmas with a first aid kit handy to patch up the injured. Add in a main road, drunk drivers and people who shout 'I want to die' while running naked in the road in front of cars and Christmas is not a fun time.

The expectations for Christmas can be hard to bear if you are homeless and short of money. They want their kids to have everything and can buy them next to nothing. That hurts and charity doesn't take away their pain.

Next year it will be someone else's turn to pick up the pieces.

All I Want For Christmas Is You -Mariah Carey

I don’t want a lot for christmas
There’s just one thing I need
I don’t care about presents
Underneath the christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true...
All I want for christmas
Is you...

I don’t want a lot for christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don’t care about presents
Underneath the christmas tree
I don’t need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa claus won’t make me happy
With a toy on christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for christmas is you...
You baby

I won’t ask for much this christmas
I won’t even wish for snow
I’m just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won’t make a list and send it
To the north pole for saint nick
I won’t even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click
’cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for christmas is you
You...

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children’s
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won’t you bring me the one I really need
Won’t you please bring my baby to me

Oh I don’t want a lot for christmas
This is all I’m asking for
I just want to see baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for christmas is
You

All I want for christmas is you baby
[repeat]

Right, so I thought I'd throw this in since Thanksgiving just passed, and this is a holiday thread after all.

Somebody out there must have had a good holiday.....

Was it an electric grill? Because that would have been REALLY funny. And you're not shallow dear. I suspect that you are very . . . very deep.

Anyway, enjoyed Thanksgiving and am looking forward to Christmas, as it will be the last one I spend in a state that really doesn't have winter and starting over somewhere else.

God... I love that alpaca picture....

Anyway, Thanksgiving was good, I saw family I hadn't seen in 10 years.

I went out to a few straight bars with my older brother and our cousin. They're well known around town apparently. They took me into a bar where a rather run-down 40-ish bartender was wearing a halter top that showed half her breasts. When brother dear introduced me to the nice lady as his little brother, she unbuttoned her top and insisted I feel her breasts. Which I reluctantly did, trying not to seem too squeamish. I didn't want to hurt her feelings. Meanwhile, dear brother and dear cousin are rolling around on the floor roaring with laughter.

At Christmas, they will pay.

My favorite holiday is Christmas eventhough it takes me a while to get into the spirit. There's nothing worse than starting to think about Christmas in September when just a few weeks ago it was still summer.

On the downside, I work in retail, so that's a somewhat dreadful part to go through.

I'm of French Canadian heritage, so instead of the usual turkey meal, we have tourtiere (meat pie) for Christmas dinner.

thaksgiving

Thanksgiving is not my 'favorite' holiday, but quite often it turns out to be the best. What I really like about it is that it's about food and family, and everyone is happy just to be together and enjoy a big special meal. It's the one holiday were no gifts are given, none are expected and none are missed. After all these years, it hasn't managed to get 'corrupted' too much by marketing, it's the least consumerized holiday we have. It is- to me- the purest holiday. It's also the one that usually more than lives up to the expectations, rather than failing to meet them and being a let down.

Thanksgiving is good.:D

*bump*

It's the holiday season. I know SOMEBODY has shopping stories, kid stories....tree decorating stories.....?

what burns my buttocks is the dumbass parents who insist on getting their screaming kids to sit on the lap of some old guy with a fake gut, fake white beard ... so that they can get a photo taken that nobody will look at in 3 weeks

I hate to admit it, but after working in retail (clothing) for damn near 20 years, I've become a bit of a scrooge when it comes to holidays. They were something to dread, and just survive, not something to celebrate.

This will be the second holiday season that I've not worked, but the dread is still there.

:(

and it sounds like only the second in many years for Abs, and Dor mentioned it too... I used to be a retail manager.

I am five years removed from the madness now. It is better every year. Give it time.

Hmmm, a retail story? I have several...ok, indoor mall, Christmas Eve, 1997(?) I think. Finally lowering the electronic gate to my store about 6:20 pm (it was supposed to be down at 6:00) and across the mall comes a man runnign hell bent for leather. Dives and slides headfirst under my gate, his head missing the lowering gate by less than a foot... Looked up and literally begged my Asst. Mgr. to let him buy "just a couple things". I just couldn't not help him after that, but I made sure he knew he had to be quick...he just grabbed and pointed and maybe ten minutes and $300 later he was on his way.

Moral: get you're shopping done early or be both fast and gracious. if he'd have been rude I'd have kicked his ass out.

On that note, I'm very excited to be seeing my sister, brother in law, two nieces, and nephew. I haven't seen my sister's family in two years, and I've never met my youngest niece!
