Roll on Christmas 2005
I'm looking forward to Christmas 2005.
My old house is near a shelter for homeless families. There is a lot of misery there around Christmas time as the reality is so different from what they would like it to be. Add cheap alcohol and the results are rows and bust-ups.
For years I and several of my neighbours have stayed sober at Christmas with a first aid kit handy to patch up the injured. Add in a main road, drunk drivers and people who shout 'I want to die' while running naked in the road in front of cars and Christmas is not a fun time.
The expectations for Christmas can be hard to bear if you are homeless and short of money. They want their kids to have everything and can buy them next to nothing. That hurts and charity doesn't take away their pain.
Next year it will be someone else's turn to pick up the pieces.
