It is hard to believe that my son is in second grade. It is even harder to believe that he had no idea what Veteran's Day was in honor of until he and I had a talk today.

He could talk about MLK Day in Kindergarten.
He understands Columbus Day.

He has certainly nailed Christmas, Easter and Halloween.

What do your children understand about holidays?
When they have a day free from school, do you talk with them about why that is the case?

What do you tell them?

(BTW, little man is a bright kid and good student, so it wasn't that he didn't pay attention ;))

I always thought that whenever a kid got the day off from school becuase of a holiday, the teachers spend like two weeks teaching them about it. they do it with thanksgiving, christmas, holloween, all those jewish holidays and I'd think that they'd do verteran's day at a time like this

I would have thought so, as well.

I look at his work every night.

I was in the classroom last week.

We talked today.

Nope. Nothing. Nada. Rien.

My children are forced to watch the War Channel....er, I mean The History Channel... with their eyes taped open like good little droogies.

Vet's Day

That is sad that they don't teach that. I did not gain the full value of Veterans Day untill I became a vet. I am thankfull I am not dead, though was seriously injured. Makes you stop and think about all those who don't make. It always puts a smile on my face when others bring up the subject too in discontent for the way our children learn today. Thanks!

As with all aspects of parenting, you have to educate and supervise. The supervision entails checking for knowledge and understanding just like reading and writing and arithmatic. If something is missed bring it up again.

It is too bad when I consider what other children may lose out on if their parents are quick to pick up the ball.

You all know there are parents out there who have no idea what their children are learning in school, good or bad.

I was raised with an extreme respect for veterans and that continues.

My grandfather's photo still hangs in my aunts living room, him , in his uniform.

All three uncles were in the military and served in Vietnam.

My brother serves now.

Fortunately, all of my loved ones have returned from their tours, but none of them returned unmarked by their experience.

Cousin: Bosnia

Uncle: 'Nam

Father: Korea

Grandfather: WWII

two Great-uncles: WWI

Can't remember the relationship: Spanish-American war

More than I can list: Civil War

etc.

Happy Veteran's Day, to all who are, were, or will be.

I grew up next to an army base in the home of a vet, yeah, I knew. I also grew up in one of only two states that still celebrate patriots day (3rd monday in april)--aka the day of the boston marathon.
