Yep, in the recent spree of making bestselling fantasy flicks (Narnia, LOTR, Potter), it's time for Terry Pratchett's Discworld to come alive. But not through Holy Wood, but as a two part TV production.

Could be good. Could be utterly horrible. Wait and see, I guess.

FANTASY COMES TRUE FOR THE HOGFATHER

09:43 - 09 February 2006
He is the best-selling fantasy fiction author from the West whose mysterious tales are loved by millions of bookworms the world over. Now, for the first time, one of the stories from Wiltshire-based Terry Pratchett's hugely popular Discworld series is to be adapted into a TV film. And the £6million Sky One production will feature a host of familiar faces, including one of Britain's best-loved actors, Sir David Jason, in a starring role.

Hogfather will be the first time a book from Pratchett's Discworld series has been made into a feature-length film.

It will be shown in two parts, combining live action with state-of-the-art computer-generated sequences.

The channel promises more famous faces from both sides of the Atlantic to join Only Fools and Horses star Sir David, who will play the role of Albert, a grumpy former wizard.

Hogfather, the third book in Pratchett's series, will be screened over Christmas. It will be filmed in studios in Romania, where the snow and mountain ranges required for the film's setting are just two hours away.

Multi-millionaire Pratchett, the UK's second most popular contemporary author, has sold more than 45million books worldwide.

Before he began writing novels, he worked for the Western Daily Press as a reporter and feature writer in the 1970s. Former Daily Press editor Eric Price described him as "easily the best features writer we had ever had".

The first chapter in the Discworld series was published in 1983 and it has spawned an impressive 34 books since. Yesterday Pratchett, who lives in a luxury home near Salisbury, joked of Sir David's decision to play the role: "It's like all my Hogswatches have come at once." He admitted the success of Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings had made fantasy fiction "the flavour of the moment".

He added: "Now there's the technology that makes it cheap to make.

What you couldn't do 10 years ago, you can do easily now. You can now make fantasy look quite real.

"Unless something really untoward happens, I'm really looking forward to seeing it in 3D." The special effects people behind Troy and Harry Potter are on board for the Hogfather film. Pratchett said that he would have a say in the look of the characters.

Sir David was approached for the role when the producers discovered he was a fan of the books. He will play Death's manservant Albert, who dresses up as a grumpy pixie helper.

The actor has since been coming up with a list of character notes.

Who's playing Susan?

and... WHO is playing Teatime?
That is probably the most terrifying character Pratchett ever wrote.

... and the Oh God! of hangovers, but that could be almost anyone, really

"I'm sorry, but ... are you telling that you've already seriously considered inhuming the Hogfather?"

"Oh yes! And the Soul Cake Duck!"

The scariest part of him was his name... though I did find the psychopat in Night Watch kinda creepy, too.

Hopefully this success will make TP feel a little less jealous of JKR.
