This is my first post here, which is about a week or so after I had my first story published on Lit. There are 5000+ hits and 17 votes! What's up with that? Guess I have to PR better.
Enormous variety seems to be the thing. I think it depends partly on the category (whether people go to read or to jack off). My first story got only 1500 reads, and 15 votes. My most read story currently has about 4500, and only 20 votes. My most recent story has about 3500 reads, and 45 votes in about 4 days.
Who knows? Voting makes less sense the more I hear about it. Difficult to ignore, though, isn't it?
I am in favor of voting as a way of measuring a story, not so much as a comparison to all others, but for comparing to my next story. I also think it gives an author something to strive for in his/her compostions.
I actually only currently have two stories up for viewing/voting.
The first has 5408 views and 37 votes.
The second has 56242 views and 163 votes.
I think most people (especially those who aren't actual members of lit) just read for the stimuli, not so much for the intellectual challenge.
I actually get a lot of feedback from my readers by "publishing" my e-mail account. I created an account specifically for Lit usage, so I don't have to worry about some random reader finding out anything I don't want them to (through my e-mail address).
One thing you might want to keep in mind if you want your numbers up is what category your story fits into. That first story of mine is in "Erotic Coupling", so just your average sort of "two people get together for some nasty fun" kind of story. But that second one is geared more towards fetish-type activities. Think about it... if your average reader is a middle-aged married man, what's he probably most interested in? Things he probably can't get? Like lesbians, anal sex, bondage? You can alway try catering to that, to see what effect that has on your numbers.
There are a lot of stories that I "hit" but turn out (in my own very personal opinion) to be duds. For many of them, I don't even bother reading through to the end. This may be because the plot/scenes may not be my cup of poison, the writing may not be to my taste, whatever. I don't find them bad (in those cases, I simply skip to the end and give them a "1" or "2"), I'm simply not interested enough to pay attention to them and be fair. So, they usually do not get a vote from me -- I assume that they count as a hit but do not turn up in the vote tally.
I admit that I read to the end and vote on about half of the stories I hit. But maybe other people do this only to 10% of the stories they hit -- that would explain the discrepancy.
I also tend to view the stories that I like multiple times, but do not vote again for them. More hits, but no votes...
