I vote for serious.

One bit of trivia fromt he site: Of all household appliances, the vibrator was the fifth to be converted to electric power.

It sounds like the vibrator has beeen taken seriously for a long time.

The one that intrigued me, was the hand cranked Victorian model (first up in the slide show.)
