I am looking for the speech David Crockett gave in Congress opposing the Indian Removal Act. I have searched via google, and I have looked on a few government sites, but while I can find references to it, I cannot find the text.

Help?

TIA

Is this about Dawes Act (General Allotment Act) of 1887?

Or The Meriam Report (The New Deal) of 1928?

Neither you idiot. Davy Crockett died in 1836 - how could he give a speech in 1887??

The Indian Removal Act when Andrew Jackson was president and Davy Crockett was a Congressman.

CV/Hanns/Kuntmode, if you don't have anything to add why don't you just shut up? Just what compels you to be the first person to reply to my threads? Your attention seeking, the fact that I see you for the troll you are and it just bugs you, or some deeper mental problem?

Ok. Fuck off, then.

*gives V-sign*

*farts*

*pees*

*deficates*

*exits the thread*

Thanks Todd

Unfortunately none of those URLs led me to the speech I was seeking. The first and the last linked to another speech I have heard attributed to him, and would like to use it sometime, but only if I can find it in an authoritative source, such as a history book or better yet the Congressional record. Too often people invent something along these lines, then other people liking what was said repeat it. When someone comes along and points out that this person never actually said that, then it undermines their credibility.

I had to go around the subject and found some info searching for, "President Jackson's Indian Bill.'

Thanks, LC - that at least gave me the official name of the act, and what I assume is a quote from Crockett afterwards, but not his speech. Unfortunately a google search using the official title for the act didn't help in finding the speech.

More research..

1830: On May 19, David speaks out fiercely against Jackson's Indian removal bill -- virtually the only Congressman to do so. The bill would move all Indians from their homes to lands west of the Mississippi. But David represents many Indians, who have settled in his state and even married into established families there. Disgusted by the government's handling of the Indians, David says that he has remained a Jackson man -- even though Jackson hasn't.
Still, David has to suppress the record of his speech because his constituency (who want the Indian land as well) are for Jackson and the bill.

I think CV said he's got "humanity stuff" in his head. Does that help explain it?
