Carmen stood on tiptoe to reach a score from the top shelf, pulling it down with a little too much force and knocking herself backwards into the shelf opposite the one she was looking at. She rubbed her sore lower back with one hand, cursing under her breath as she looked at the title of what she had just taken down. It wasn't even the right piece. Sighing, she replaced it in almost the right spot on the shelf and decided to move on to some lower shelf work. Her arms were aching from reaching so high, and she only had another 15 minutes left of work anyway, no use killing herself over the last part of her day. Settling down on the floor, Carmen closed her eyes for a moment, thinking about how much money she was going to get in her next paycheck. The tuition was due next month and she didn't have it all, not by far. Her financial aid award was minuscule, a fact that she had argued over with the financial aid office for an hour or more. They claimed their hands were tied; despite her 3.6 GPA, they just couldn't afford to give Carmen more money. Education funding cutbacks were everywhere, and Carmen's parents didn't have the money to pay for her tuition. The college she was attending was a good one and, as such, extremely expensive. Carmen needed all the income she could get.
Her day was finally over, and Carmen logged her hours, clocked out and grabbed her things to head home. She was about to unlock her car when she heard her phone ringing. Worried that it was important, she fished out her phone and took the call.
"Hello? Mom? Yeah, I'm about to leave work now -- what do you mean? ...you and dad both? How is that possible? .... No, I can't.... No, Mom, I need to put it toward my tuition! ....can't you guys try and get them back?"
Carmen pressed her palm to her forehead, frustrated. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Both of her parents had been laid off in the same day and now they were asking her to cough up half her paycheck to pay the cellphone bill. Practically screaming now, Carmen retorted "I need this education, so I don't end up like the two of you!" With that, she ended the call and threw her phone back into her purse. She hadn't meant to sound so ungrateful. But life seemed too hard for a girl of 19, barely out of high school. Her fingers combed through her thick, dark curls, deep brown eyes staring at a spot on the ground. What the hell was she going to do? She was barely getting any hours at the library, and she had already sold a bunch of clothes and old books. She was at the end of her list of options. Standing there in the parking lot, Carmen looked absolutely forlorn in her tight denim shorts and loose fitting off the shoulder tee. The deep blue of the shirt contrasted nicely with her tanned skin, but also seemed to highlight her sadness. She could sense that tears were coming, and as she began to walk toward her car again, she tried to hold them in.
