I did so because multiple people on that thread (including me) had expressed ignorance as to the function or definition of Tribal Elders. I looked it up, and thought it was not only interesting in conjunction with what you had written about Australian Elders, but also worth posting to put the subject of the thread in context.
As an aside, you may find this map interesting. In a nation of roughly 300 million people, American Indians and Alaskan natives make up slightly less than one percent of the population. However, the distribution is such that many portions of the U.S. (including heavily populated areas of the east coast) have little or no interaction with American Indians at all. I don't know if that will alleviate your surprise at our ignorance regarding the function of Elders or not, but there you have it.
