Even Trump is in favor of bringing in mass numbers of "highly skilled" immigrants every year. Everybody seems to think this is a great idea.
Its not a great idea at all. First off, it shows what crap education we have. In the past we would poach the occasional top scientist or whatever, but for the most part we raised our own American scientists, engineers, and other technical professionals. We had "highly skilled" workers coming out of our ears in the 50s and 60s. Something is seriously wrong with our educational system when we have to bring in 90% of our high tech workers from overseas.
Bringing in these "highly skilled" workers is a safety valve so we don't have to confront the fact our education system, or perhaps the work ethic or moral character of our students, doesn't allow us to compete with India, China, Iran, etc. Those countries spend far less on education and get far better results.
Finally, poaching all these "highly skilled" workers is harmful to the countries they come from. These third world countries will never develop when their best and brightest leave for the US (or Europe) by the millions.
And not just the engineers and scientists, but even worse when doctors leave. These poor countries need doctors even more than we do.
